We are offering a collection of original antique Japanese wood block prints from an estate. This first series of four pieces is from the Fish Series of Utagawa Hiroshige. A ukiyo-e artist working during the Edo Period in Japan. The artist was born Ando Tokotaro. The son of a samurai and fireman. He was orphaned at about 14 and became a pupil of Toyohiro Utagawa. He later took the name Utagawa Hiroshige. He is known by three names when looking at Japanese art and artist records, which include Ando Hiroshige, Utagawa Hiroshige and Hiroshige I. In the first half of his career, he painted typical images of kabuki actors, samurai, geishas, animals, etc. Beginning in about 1830, he started painting in a new landscape genre. He is now considered the dominant figure in Japanese printmaking during the first half of the 19th Century. His most famous ... moreseries were the'53 Stations of the Tokaido' and'100 famous Views of Edo. This image is of two fish and it is in very good condition.
