1646 Lovely Keere/Speed Map of the Roman Empire - Europe, Mid East, North Africa
1646 Keere Map- The Romane Empire' Pieter van den Keere was perhaps the finest map engraver of the late 1500's and early 1600's. His name can be found on beautiful miniature maps issued by Bertius. Blaeu and Jansson among others. He was the brother-in-law of his only real rival for the title of champion engraver, Jodocus Hondius and worked with him on many projects. One of his last efforts, issued in the year of his death, was a miniature world atlas of 20 maps derived from those of the great English mapmaker, John Speed. Combined with his earlier English county maps these have come to be known as the'miniature Speed' and were issued by Speed's publisher, George Humble. They have become very popular among collectors. This fine copper engraved map of the Roman Empire comes from the first 1646 edition of'Prospect ... moreof the most famous parts of the world' and is a'miniature Speed' Keere's inimitable engraving allows him to pack the map with detail without loss of clarity. The map names the Roman provinces. Major cites, and the topography is nicely illustrated. There is a title cartouche and attractive lettering. I would love to start by talking about all the features and perfect condition of these but it is better to be methodical. This is in spite of the fact that serious skiiers have clothes custom made and the details are everything. There seem to be three major factors in assessing the value of ski pants. The first(on Ebay) is condition. If something is beaten to a rag. It has little value while even a small rip or hole in some garments greatly reduce value. But overall, when a used item of clothing is considered, this is the most powerful determinant of price. The second is the maker and material of the pants. The third is the model and features. These are like new and they should be since I overpaid for them and only wore them for two trips for about ten wearings in Colorado. They have no damage or flaws. The maker which a search showed up ... morewas North Face which is actually a mid range product for ski shops and department stores but decent. The model is"Big Sir or Sur? and has apparently been dropped by North face. This model has numerous features but is made of 100% Nylon and is not as thick as some ski or snowboard pants. So taking the three together places these in the upper middle or lower upper range of men's ski pant prices. It measures 22 inches across the waist lying flat for a 44 inch waist measurement. Since they stretch. I found an upper total of 46 inches. Both of these numbers should be considered in light of the fact that these should be over pants. This is because I would always layer when snow skiing and these were ideal for that. They are strongly water resistant and thin enough not to bake you if you have"civilian" threads underneath. Most of all, since I could wear what I wanted under them, I could stay flexible and not wrapped like the kid on Christmas Story. The inseam is 30 but I always wanted snow pants short to give the boots and etc. as much berth as possible.The lenght of the pants bring me to the first feature which I will delay to the pics description. PIPE. PLATFORM-STYLE, BANKS OF MISSISSIPPI. NORTH OF ST. LOUIS Length: 5" Width: 1 1/4" Weight: 6.0 oz A tube- pipe found by a private land owner along the banks of the Mississippi River about 5 miles north of St. Louis. This fellow had been actively seeking artifacts from areas within his personal property. Acquired by me during a recent cross-country trip. The pipe is made of a brown-black stone. It has a classic. Curved platform base-though not very pronounced. Mouth and hand stem areas are somewhat rounded. Giving this pipe a pleasing design view. Abrasion streaks. Inner bowl extrusions and a few grooves/chinks are evident along the pipe base and sides. Slight evidence of a grooved upper lip area of pipe base. Pipe sold"as is. as was acquired. The publisher is stated in the bottom center margin. It is not matted nor framed being sold as a single sheet as shown in the main pic, blank on the reverse. Overall, a very nice map that would frame up nicely. Size: The dimensions of the map area between the neat lines measures 16 by 21 inches(41x55cm) on a page measuring 17 1/2 by 23 1/4" 45x59cm) with a ... moremargin all around as seen in the main pic. Condition: The map is in Very Good condition with overall light tonal ageing and some darkening around the edges of the margin. Otherwise it is very clean with strong color on a heavy page, blank on the reverse. It is basically as seen in the pics, see the pic for more on condition. The pics are of the actual map.
