Offered is a vintage MSA Coal Mining hat. The writing is partially gone so it's hard to read. So I really don't know too much about this hat. The webbing inside is pretty nice. I picked it up(along with another one I have listed) at an estate yesterday where the guys father had passed and he was left a few things.and evidently he was a miner all of his life. I'm not sure of the size or type because I can't quite read it. It is in overall great condition with no damage-only some age-appropriate wear. I will answer all questions. VINTAGE MSA COMFO 1940-1950'S MINERS CAP
Up for auction today is this MSA COMFO CAP 1940-1950's miners cap. This was an estate find cradeled on top of a box of nuts and bolts completely covered in coal dust. With each layer of coal dust I cleaned from this cap I felt it's history. I removed no paint. That was scuffed away from many days of working in the mine. This cap has a medium chip near the back and some very small scuffs around it's rim, also two stress cracks on either side of it's brim, maybe from being taken off and on or maybe during a difficult day on the job being taken off and thrown down a few times. Refer to pictures for complete condition. I usually try to bring vintage items back to their prestine condition if possible, but this item was taken off the last day this miner spent on this job covered in coal dust and stayed there until now, it spoke ... morevolumes of what they went through to make an honest days wage. I have done much cleaning to this old hat but after a while I felt like I was cleaning away it's history. There is still much coal dust in it's creases, I would like to think a tribute to the miner that wore this hat, but it could use much more cleaning, but I will leave that up to the buyer. Up for auction is a low vein Comfo cap with headliner and Auto-lite carbide lamp. The cap measures tip of brim to back of cap 10 1/8" And from side to side measures 7 5/8" Inside of the leather headliner measures approx. 6 7/8" We believe it to be the original headliner and lamp. You can see from the photos of the inside, very old newspapers were stuffed in headliner, to maybe cause it to fit better. Photos should show crack in 2nd photo, 1/2" bottom by string and another minor crack, at the bottom back of helmet 3/8" One 1/8" chip on bottom side rim. Comes with Auto-lite made in U.S.A. Universal Lamp Co. carbide lamp. Lamp has been jimmy rigged probably to fit better on helmet, but not broken. Stands 4" high. Vintage MSA Comfo Respirator. P/N 459029 With Cartridges. Cartridges say: Pt. No. 459317& 9730. Approval No. TC-23C-47. This item was from acquired from an estate lot. I wanted the paint brushes. The mask appears to be older and to have been gently used. Minimal apparent use wear, minimal scratch or scuff. Inside is clean. Strap elastic has more give than a new one would have, but buckles, hardware, etc. are all intact and function. Cartridges appear not to have been used at all. Gaskets are in place in the mask. Up for bid is a VINTAGE MSA COMFO-CAP MINER'S HELMET. Cap is black with safety stickers from the Peabody Mine in Illinois. Stickers are from 1981 to 1984. One sticker is very cool as it is a commemorative sticker for"The First Fatal Free Year" 1981. Everything is in good shape. The inside of the helmet could use a wipe down. But I didn't want to pull it apart to do that. Has all the normal scuffs of wear. It comes with a Wheat Lamp helmet light. It was on the helmet when I bought it. There is no cord or battery pack. Just the light. The cord was cut off. There is a side screw missing on the clamp of the Wheat Lamp. It can easily be replaced. If I find one before I send it, I will replace it. If not, I will leave that up to you. I bought this from an antique mall in the midwest quite awhile ago. Vintage MSA Comfo Miner Mining Helmet Cap Hat with Liner
Vintage MSA miners fiberglass helmet. Not sure of the size as the label is missing but the leather part of the liner measures about 6 1/8" wide X 7 3/8" long. Liner looks in great condition to me. No broken strings. See photos. On the right bottom lip of the helmet there is an insignificant crack about 3/4" long on the outside and only about 1/4" long on the inside. It's very tight and the gap doesn't open when you flex it in that area. Located right where the bill slopes down into the side of the helmet, see pictures above. Up for auction is a vintage MSA Comfo Cap. Tiger Stripe Low Vein Mining Hard Hat. This hard hat has no cracks and some light scratches from normal wear. The leather liner needs replaced it is in bad condition. The hat measures 8 3/4 inches long and 7 1/2 inches wide on the inside. Also included is the old lamp that was on it when I found it in my old barn hanging on a hook. Vintage Miners cap that was once owned by the late Colonel Sam Hale. USAF. After distinguished service in WW2, Colonel Hale went on to serve in the US Dept of Interior. The cap is stamped C-3 and the label indicates adjustable to sizes 6 1/2 to 7 5/8. While not pristine, the cap is in very good condition with very few marks.The emblem on the side is of DOI Bureau of Mines. The United States Bureau of Mines was established in 1910 by the Department of the Interior and abolished in 1996. No attempt has been made to clean. The interior snap in liner needs to be replaced.
