Antique Wooden Spice Container Measuring 9.25" 23.5cm) high Bit of a mystery item but without doubt it has been used as a spice container as it has a lovely rich smell of turmeric and some yellow staining to the interior! As to origin at a guess I would say North African although that is a guess and as for age then anyone's guess is as good as mine although I think it could have quite a bit of age due to the patina and interior usage. I purchased this from an artists estate who had previously used it as a prop for still life painting. His estate contained an eclectic mix of ancient artefacts through to contemporary design. Turned wood with a lid with finial. It looks at some point it has been decorated or covered in a protective outer layer. I assume to keep the content fresh? Aaron Cuffie made his home in the area of Columbia, North Carolina and fished the waters of the Albemarie sound his whole life. I bought this from a descendant of the Cuffie family in 1995. She remembered seeing lots of these type carved floats as a kid growing up. Metal Komfo Yawn figure Bernstein Manufacturing Co North Wales PA copyright 1918
This paperweight was made for the Bernstein Manufacturing Company that made mattresses. Bed frames etc. It was copyrighted by Edward Joseph Van Landeghem of North Wales, PA on November 14, 1918. The copyright text reads"Model of figure in pajamas standing on mattress with hand to mouth yawning. That describes it better than I can. The heavy metal paperweight weighs about two pounds and is 3.75" tall. Across the front is the Komfo Yawn logo. This was made by pouring some sort of metal into a mold and as this was done quickly and cheaply. There is evidence of bubbles in the mold that appear as bubbles on the bottom of the figure and the back. This has been handled over the years and has a nice patina- it has a silver color- some areas of the figure were polished smooth in the manufacturing and the rest left with a rough finish. There ... moreis some light rusting to the surface which does not in any way detract nor will it damage the solid metal figure. Nothing has been done to clean this item. It displays very nicely. This is heavy and will cost $8.50 to mail to any address in the Continental US with delivery confirmation.
