David W. Mann ultra precision motorized X-Y stage
Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 This is a very nice X Y stage made by the David W. Mann company that came out of an MIT lab. I think it was used in IC photolithography. The ~8 x 13” flat cast iron stage on top travels 2.5” in each direction. And it has a ~7” diameter micrometer dial that directly reads(in inches, surprisingly) to.000050” fifty millionths, without a vernier. The ways it travels on are made like lathe ways(a triangle and a V) and are beautifully scraped, as is the top of the stage. I’ve read that the Mann lead screws were very carefully lapped, and that Starrett used to use a Mann linear stage to inspect their calipers and scales. It has an X axis stepper drive that I’ve never powered up, and an adjustable ratchet on the Y axis that allows identical increments. There is very light surface ... morerust on the top stage that should clean off(the scraping is clearly visible) but none at all on the pristine ways or lead screws. It's heavy, ~80# and about 26" wide overall. The motor section should be removable to reduce the overall width if manual use only is desired. Free local pickup is of course much preferred, but it can be packed.
