The cord has some fraying right at the base of the unit. And in multiple places along its length. But nothing serious enough to prevent it from lighting up and emitting the normal electrical discharge ~ which is adjustable with the knob on the end of the power unit. However. The cord deterioration is such that we would definitely not be playing around in bed with it. Or putting undue stress on the cord. Around the adjusting knob. It reads'The Master Electric Co. Chicago. Ground Pontil Purple"Blackglass" Laboratory Beaker with Pinch Spout Mid to Late 1800s Our 16th Year on eBay! From our personal collection. A roughly ground pontil apothecary or laboratory flask in the darkest violet glass we have ever seen. We have owned many"blackglass" bottles and the dark purple variety is the most unusual, because it barely lets any light through at all. This one is so dark, that when held directly up to the sun on a clear day, absolutely no apparent lig ht comes through. Deep violet blackglass was used in the 1800s in an attempt to make a glass so dark that virtually no light came through. This was done in the pharmacy. Laboratory and apothecary trades in an attempt to prevent contents from being damaged by light; however, the glass was also used for decorative items because of the luster. The dark ... moreness of the violet glass in this piece is so dense. That items appear to be made of highly polished onyx stone. This is the closest to true"black" glass there is. The laboratory flask is hand-blown. With a roughly ground pontil and a pinched lip spout. It is in original, antique-mint condition, with only a couple tiny scratches and retains great sheen and gloss. The scratches are insignificant and mentioned for complete accuracy.
