Very rare Japanese, M&Katera microscope----Olympus, Tiyoda,Nikon.
A very early M&Katera Tokyo. Antique brass microscope.It dates from around 1920. The company history of Olympus details M&Katera as the progenitor of Olympus, having been made by the founder of Olympus. A number of parts on the microscope are marked A20, perhaps indicating the model# It is a very early example, of this particular model, with a graceful curved and Japanned base. Any other versions extant of this microscope, that I have seen, have a plain squarish horseshoe base and were probably made much later. There are some references. Indicating that M&Katera used E.Leitz optics and indeed there are elements of the design of this microscope that pay homage to a Leitz design but the#3 objective fitted to this instrument,marked M&Katera Tokyo 3, although similar to an E.Leitz#3 is not the same. The objective works beautifully ... moreand in comparison to a Leitz objective from the same period, it is about as good-in sharpness, with possibly better contrast. The#7 objective fitted into the two piece nosepiece in this instrument is an E.Leitz objective, matched very well to the#3, and also provides a fine image. The eyepiece marked 3, appears to be original as well. All parts of this microscope work as expected. The coarse rack and pinion is tight and smooth and the column. Helical screw, fine adjustment is likewise smooth and precise. The nosepiece and substage disc diaphragm have precise clickstops. The ocular tube is adjustable from 130mm to 195mm. The microscope appears to be solid brass with nickel plating.Japanning and enamel. This is a beautiful and rare instrument, important to the history of Olympus. The first and second pictures are through the#3 objective and the fitted#3 eyepiece. The third is the same as#2( a group of diatoms) but with the#7 objective and#3 ocular.

This is a complete and fully functional Nikon microscope with binocular veiwing head. Four Nikon objectives, adjustable stage, adjustable iris, and light source. All parts are authentic Nikon parts and all are made in Japan. This microscope is in excellent working condition with minor scratches of the black finish(enamel? from use only. The microscope comes with an inspection certificate from Nikon, Tokyo, Japan showing it has passed all conformity testing when it was manufactured in 1963. The microscope was purchased new by a physician in training and who used it personally in medical school. The microscope was subsequently stored and not used. I obtained it when he retired. He was an internal medicine physician in office practice(a specialty not in need of a microscope) and thus did not have a need for it. All the glass lenses look clear ... moreand scratch free. It features binocular viewing and the eyepiece lenses are Nikon Bi H.K.W. 10x eyepieces and are adjustable. The Nikon objectives are: 4x 0.1, 10x 0.25, 40x 0.65, Hi 100x 1.25. The stage has a slide holder with X an Y geared movements available by two adjusting knobs. The stage has both macro and micro height adjustments. This microscope comes with a Nikon light source with a power switch and dimmer control. The mirror is two sided, flat and concave and the light source is infinitely adjustable given a separate light source and mirror. This microscope is all metal and is heavy at about 15 pounds plus the wooden box. It would be great for a professional or student. This is a quality microscope and they just are not made like this any more. I have listed the various better known scope manufacturers in the title for search purposes. But for all I know it doesn’t work with any of their products. The turret appears to be in good/used condition and it does rotate the way it should or the way that I think it should anyway. But scopes in general are not my thing. It’s about 3” in diameter. Maybe a bit larger than that. What I think is distinctive about it is the mount on the back side. Which is flat. All the other turrets I took the time to peruse appear to have an angular mount. Magnifications on the phase contrast lenses are 10, 20, 40, and 100x. The 10, 20, and 40x lenses are plan. The 100x is an oil immersion lens. The objectives are free of defects. The 10x widefield oculars have intact coatings and show no evidence of delamination. The phase contrast condenser is in beautiful condition with an adjustable iris, anuli#s 1, 2, 3, 4, and a darkfield stop(which is a lot of fun especially when viewing small water-borne organisms. The stage works perfectly in regards to X/Y travel. Both coarse and fine focus adjustments on the microscope frame are in working order.
