Rare Vintage Leather Handheld Medical Obstetric Stirrups
These devices are from a'turn of the century' doctors estate. I believe them to be Obstetrical stirrups. Each'shoe' is fitted to a metal stirrup which is attached to a adjustable leather strap which terminates in a pretty heavy duty hand grip. The piece shown by itself in the last photo appears to be some sort(or part) of a leather sling. There is some deterioration with the leather shoes. This table came out of the estate of a gentleman who was a doctor in the late 1920's. He purchased the table second hand to use as an exam table in his first office. I have never seen a physician's exam table quite like this before and I suspect that it may have originally been owned by a funeral director and used to display the deceased in their own homes. This was a common practice during the late 1800's but had fallen out of fashion by the 1920's. Most other doctor's exam tables I've seen are adjustable. Please ask. This is a great set of lenses, including the frames! The frames are adjustable to accommodate different eye/facial structures, I'm assuming. We counted the lenses individually and came up with 197, and there are a few missing ones. I didn't pull every si ngle lens out b ut did come across one that had a crack in it. I couldn't find a name or date on any of the pieces. Including the box. It looks like the case was originally covered in leather and it has worn pretty much all away. There are some traces of leather on the bottom. It possibly had the name somewhere ... moreon the leather at one time. The original handle has been replaced by what looks like an old shoe string. The case has a closure lock that still works and you push a button to release it to open. When the case opens. A few of the lens fall out of there slots, not sure if there is supposed to be something to hold them back but will do so for shipping. I'm sure some of those lenses are out of their proper slots too. There are some pretty odd lens in there too, and we took pictures of these. Any questions let me know! The stretcher is overall in pretty decent cosmetic condition with the normal scuffs and scratches on the exterior. There was some light surface rust on a few parts also. The mat on top looks to be in fair shape also with no major tears in it. All of the wheels roll well and the couple that I tried the lock works properly. One of the back wheels will lock straight when the wheel is swiveled but can be unlocked with the lever on it. I'm assuming this is the way it is supposed to work.
