Gunsmiths, Ship builders and many other craftsman of the period. The smithy that made this one. Some time in the 1700s, was a true artist. While there are no makers marks or signatures{other than two dots near the top and shown in one of the photos} it's the best one I've ever seen. It is entirely hand forged and really quite large at 13.5" long and weighing about 1 pound. The curved piece is a full 6.25" along the bend. Please note how the arms ... morestarting at the hinge go from square{4 sides} to octagonal{8 sides} then back to square. The last two inches become round before forming the points. The lovely thumb screw is in the form of a heart. Condition can only be described as incredible. Points have not been sharpened or shortened. No pitting at all. Good tight hinge with no wobble or play. Good tight fitting thumb screw. No damage. Etc. I've always been in awe of the early blacksmith work. This has been mine for over 30 years. It came out of a Richard Bourne whaling auction which included many whaling and ship builders tools from a New Bedford, MA home in the early 1980s. Up for auction is this old hand-forged branding iron tool. It appears to have a combination of the letters"JAM' or"AM" These branding irons were used by the ranchers to identify their cattle and this particular branding iron appears to have had a design incorporated with the initials on it near the top of the"A" Many of the cattle ranchers used certain symbols in addition to their initials on their branding irons to identifying their cattle and their specific ranch. On this branding iron there appears to be wings on both sides of the"A" that may represent the symbol that means"flying" The hand-forged branding iron was not made with the exactness of an artisan and is not perfectly flat when it is stood on the initialed end. It is a bit rocky if played with when stood that way. At the rounded ... moreend there is an opening where a pole was once placed to hold the branding iron for heating it by the fire out on the range where the branding usually took place. It measures 35" long overall. It has a tintube to put the seed or bulb down. It is in very good condition with rust on some of the metal parts. The wood on the handle is solid. It looks like the original lever to open the bottom has been replaced at some time. There is also a few dents in the tin tube. These are great for small gardens or planting flower beds. They are also great for decorating and it will display very well. This item is in as found condition and has not been cleaned. 14" Hand Wood Beam Boring Tool
I have another Primitive Wood Working/Boring Tool. This one has 1 ¼” stamped on the shaft but I can’t see a name. It is about 14” long with a 16” handle which looks like it was home made. It also has a flat piece of steel welded to the top on the shaft to attach the handle. The handle has some cracks in it on the bottom. I will try to disassemble it for shipping. Here is another Primitive Wood Boring Tool. It has a number 6 stamped on the shaft and is about 12 ½” long and 1 ½” big around. It looks like Allen is stamped on the shaft also but it's hard to read. 21" Hand Wood Beam Boring Tool
Here is a Primitive Woodworking Tool that I can't find a name or date on. The shaft is about 21" long and the handle is about 15" wide. The handle has been fixed with a winding of copper as it has a crack starting in the middle going to one side. It has a number 6 on the shaft. I will disassemble it for shipping. This auction is for a hand made soapstone eagle or other bird of prey implement(depicted in the flag of Zimbabwe) and it measures approximately 10 x 7 x 1.5 cms and at 150 grams. I have tried to show these in the pictures below but I have only a cheap camera and poor light in my cottage. Whatever this item's intended purpose- it was definitely designed to be held in the hand. Although its carving is rudimentary. The cut outs fit the hand perfectly- giving the holder a really secure grip on it.
