Which has retained much of its' original finish and is a good snug fit. All of the rings are present and well attached, the top and bottom ring are agate lined. W. L. E. Gurley of Troy New York was the dominant force in the manufacture and distribution of quality surveying instruments from the time of their inception in the mid 1800's thru today. Their name has always been associated with top of the line quality throughout their history. And the instruments they manufactured to help build America. Pictured here is a 22" Gurley Engineer's Wye Level by W. L. E Gurley of Troy NY. It dates from the late 19th century. Levels like this looked very similar for nearly 100 years with only minor changes. This is the largest size for its' time. It telescopes to 24" Included in the box is a roller tape. The level still has a bubble found in it and all the knobs appear to function properly at this item. The lenses are scratched. However, the transit is still in functional condition and focuses well. I was Given this Transit Level from an elderly man. His father was an engineer. In fact he helped put in the streets in Biloxi. Miss Before the Casino's came. I believe he stopped using it some time in late 1940's or 1950's. It is in over all very good condition. There is ware on the black finish over the brass scope. Lot's of patina. Under the balance the plate reads Troy N.Y. W& L.E. Gurley. I've done a lot of checking to come up with the date. I checked a book that was in survey antiques image viewer. In 1909 the first book was posted showing this label for the first time, Before that a book posted in 1905 had shown a different factory label. The scope and all it's fitting are made of brass.It also has a small piece that opens and closes the scope eye.The box is in good condition with both straps that close like a belt. The box has brass plate that reads W&LE GURLEY TROY NY. I do not have a key for the lock, but it looks like all you work need is an old key. No rust just years of wear of the finish on the scope& the color has faded on the work stand.The stand is a nice one, you can still see the original red and yellow paint.It's very sturdy) It has brass bottom tips.I really don't know much about this instrument.
