RARE 1874 Knox & Shain Antique Surveying Wye Level + Original Tripod & Box
This is quite a nice old level. On the remains of a label there is the date 1874 and Penn. RR Co. The optics are a little dirty but good, 1 cross hair is there but the other is broke and wrapped around the good one. The original level base and tripod have heavy patina since they were not stored with the same care as the level, needs some cleaning off with a brass wire brush, scope is Postage is $45.00 for 2 boxes within the US. Because o inches long. Because of the tripod I cannot ship this outside the USA; no charge for careful packing. Here is some information on Knox& Shain: Joseph Knox Jr. was born in 1805. His father Joseph Knox Sr. operated the Phoenix Tavern from 1807 to 1822. The Phoenix Tavern was next door to Thomas Whitney's shop in the Northern Liberties. Joseph Sr. also witnessed the inventory of Thomas Whitney's ... moreestate. Thus it is very likely that Joseph Knox Jr. served an apprenticeship or at least learned the trade at Whitney's shop which is where he may have met Wm. J. Young. Joseph Knox is first mentioned in Phila directories in 1829 as a mathematical instrument maker. In the 1837 directory and only this directory there is the entry for Draper& Knox at Edmund Draper's address. It is not known where Knox worked from 1829 on but by the early 1840's he was foreman in Young's shop. In 1850 he and Charles J Shain started in business and in the 1850 Franklin Institute Fair they exhibited a telegraph register. Knox made surveying and telegraph instruments until he died died Feb 16 1877 Charles J Shain was born 1822 and served his apprenticeship with Young. There is a Young Compass marked on the under side Tom Tennant March 31 1842 Charles J. Shain April 12 1842. apparently Tom and Charles had nearly finished there apprenticeships and were allowed to put there names on the instrument(out of sight) Shain continued(off and on) with Knox and Shain up to his death in 1891. RARE 1860 W.T. Gregg Surveyors Wye Level + Orig. Box - Only 1 I Have Ever Seen
This is rare American level. The only one I have ever seen by Gregg; I just listed a transit by Gregg. It is in good working condition and has a 16 1/2" long scope. The optics and cross hairs are good, the motions turn well, level is in nice working condition. There is no tripod but it was common for the NY makers to use the same tripod so it might be possible to find one; it does have the original box. One of the arms that holds the scope on is broken, an easy fix for a machinst. P ostage is $30.00 if within the US. More if you are outside the USA; no charge for careful packing. Vintage Buff& Buff 18" surveying wye level with original painted dark green finish with a few scratches(mostly around level) Glass on level is intact& not cracked. Looking through the lens is a bit cloudy(see pic#s 6& 7 as I think this"crystallization" is the cause& appears to be on the inside) but it does still focus. Knobs seem to work fine. Base is 3 1/2" x 8. Box is in good but used vintage condition. No attempt was made to clean the box or level. The box still has the original leather strap& the best part is it's stamped"Buff No. 26378" also has the metal Buff plate still attached(see pic#s 8. 9, 10) There is a random sticker of some sort off to the right of the plate& the box has scuffs& marks, however, it is not cracked.
