The sign states that the SPRINGFIELD FIRE& MARINE INSURANCE CO. was CHARTERED IN 1849. Though I don't think this was from 1849. It appears it is still in the mid to late 1800s as far as it's age. The metal is dark and looks like bronze. Not sure if it is copper or something else which is darkened with age. A magnet does not stick to the metal and it is a heavy piece. To the early 1900s. The sign consists of a heavy brass plate mounted on a thick oak board. The overall size is roughly 9x14 inches. The black on the brass and the white of the lettering do not appear to be paint but I am not sure how the effect was achieved. The sign has a cast iron hanger screwed to the back. The sign is in good condition with a little brass showing through and the two black buttons covering the bottom two screws missing. This is an antique insurance company sign. A"reverse painted" glass sign. The image is painted on the back in gold and black. There are two or three small paint loss spots, as shown, in the black area. It is from The Georgia Home Insurance Company, a beautiful sign done in solid colors. Nice"scene" in the middle. It measures 13 1/2" by 21 1/2" On the back is the original paper label from the maker, a Walter Hoppe of New York. Difficult to get a good photo of this glass item, camera flash is the issue. This is an antique solid brass advertising sign for Aetna. It is the big. Heavy one, 17 1/2" by 35 1/2" and weighs around 6 pounds. It says on the front"Aetna Life Insurance Company, Aetna Accident And Liability Company, Accident, Disability, Health, Liability, Automobile, Plate Glass, Burglary, Flywheel, Sprinkler Insurance" There are no cracks, holes, or damage. The black"back paint" is about 70% or better, and there are only a few surface tarnised spots on the back. This has a slight curve to it, I think from being rolled through the initial pressing procedure, as it lays perfectly flat laying on the floor or mounted. Overall, a scarce sign in pretty good shape. Antique or Vintage Tin Sign: INSURED HOME - NEW YORK (Insurance Company)
I believe this tin sign or badge dates from the years when home owners had to post notice that their home was insured. In order to be"serviced" by the fire department. If the home wasn't insured, the firefighters would often pass on it- they knew they wouldn't get paid to put out the fire! Our current system isn't great, but who would want to go back to those"good old days" This oval sign measures 8-1/8" across and is quite thin and flimsy, it's a miracle it has survived. It has a generous amount of surface corrosion, also two dents and one actual hole that I think appear to be from bullets! It has a holder that I believe is meant to hold dates for a perpetual calendar. The si gn measures 19" tall by 12.7/8" wide. The holder slot is approx. 7.1/4" wide by 5" tall. The sign features a print by W. McCallum Hogg and it's dated 1949. The sign has rusty areas. Namely across the top, especially in the left corner. It also has scratches and scuffs and there's also some light paint splatter towards the bottom. The sign is bent out of shape and it has some dents in it. The typical round marker was given to policy holders to hang on their building, but we are not sure why this one is shaped differently. The trademark double pumper trademark was first issued in 1835. The exact age of this piece is unknown. But there are signs of heavier corrosion at the bottom edge, indicating that this hung outdoors. Antique Prudential Assurance Co Brass Trade Sign 9x14 Inches Insurance? c1910s Description: This is an antique trade sign advertising the Prudential Assurance Co. and dating I would guess. To the early 1900s. The sign consists of a heavy brass plate mounted on a thick solid oak board. The overall size is roughly 9x14 inches. The black finish on the brass and the white of the lettering do not appear to be paint but I am not sure how the effect was achieved. The sign has a cast iron hanger screwed to the back. The sign is in good condition with a little brass showing through and the black caps covering the bottom two screws missing. It weighs 6 pounds before packing and has a shipping weight of 7 pounds.
