Case and Son Insurance Agents Sign,Marion,Kansas,hunting,dogs,woman with rifle
This sign is for Case and Son Insurance Company which still exists and claims that it is about a148 year old company. I would think that they were independent agents in Marion when this sign was made but now represent Progressive Insurance. Marion has about 3000 people and was named after Francis Marion. The Swamp Fox. I contacted the company to see if they are interested but I doubt it. It's a good image of a hunter with her dogs. I suppose it's not unusual for a woman hunting by herself but it's not an image probably seen in advertising very often, but that's only a guess. Considering the image of the woman's clothes are so dated, and that this sign came from a long time collector, and there is not even a short phone number printed, this might be a very old sign. Considering this steam engine locomotive print is connected to the origins of a great American company and the image is in in excellent connection. This is special for various reasons in my opinion. Trains will always be an important part of our history, the efforts to succeed and improve, the adventures that have been taken and the numerous mysteries are us as a country. The Hartford and New Haven Railroad started in 1872 and this image represents a locomotive from about 1875 probably, near the beginnings of two major companies with the Hartford Steam Boiler insuring the H&NHRR and all the nightmares that have happened to train companies. I have two of these lithographs of trains by the HSBI&IC, which has to be the longest name for any insurance company. Don't think that it is a small company though. It was founded in 1866 and it is a global company, and the largest insurance company of breakdown of equipment and related inspection services with over 5 million locations that it services. I Ican find the term Farm Bureau Insurance of Kansas and Farm Bureau Financial Service and they appear to be the same company. The former with the local name still and the latter for the Insurance Company/Corporation that works with people and businesses in about 14 Midwest states. The company now has a fancy B for its logo but I think the sunflower looks better and especially good on this metal sign that is a square at about 14.5"x14.5" This company is about 65 years old and sells all kinds so insurance, casualty, auto, annuity, etc. This sign appears to be in good general condition with the typical scuffs or scratches and a bend in the upper right corner. The Insurance Company of North America is the oldest stock insurance company in the United States. It has an extensive history that can be found on Wikipedia. It was founded in 1792 in Philadelphia. PA. 60,000 People kicked in $10 each to raise a sizable $600,000 to concentrate on insuring for fire, life and marine insurances. It has been called INA for short for many decades. Later it was called INA Corporation only to merge with Connecticut General Corporation in 1982 to become the well known corporation, at least here in CT for health insurance, called CIGNA. The history of all these companies is fascinating, and it takes careful reading, at least for me to try to figure out the basic details to print as a posting. The interesting part of this sign is the fire marks shown. In the 1800's and even 1900's insurance companies put metal plates on houses and they had their own fire brigade. When a house caught fire various brigades may have shown up but only the insurance company that was liable for the property would try to put out the fire. There is quite a bit of discrepancy about this history. Some towns had volunteers who helped everyone. Also some brigades put out fires of houses for other insurance companies' insured properties. There would be compensation to them and the volunteers sometimes. I would think collecting these fire marks would be a great hobby. I have to look into that more. Perhaps it was given to offices that sell their products or to long time employees. I have no idea when or where any of these signs were made although there are a few with stickers that might help. If you wonder what proof that insurance companies just absorb people's money, this company, Employers Mutual Casualty Company, has 34 vice-Presidents. It was established in 1926 and seems to be still in operation with what must be many regional offices throughout the country with its headquarters on Mulberry Street in Des Moines, Iowa. This insurance company sells a myriad of kinds of insurance. This sign has a metal frame and a composite body. It is about 12"x20" and and the triangle in the center that looks like it is decorated with a plant. Is attractive. The alliterative slogan, savings, service, strength sounds solid. There is probably some air underneath the very top layer of varnish, plastic or whatever. The Motors Insurance Corporation was formed in 1925 to cover damages for General Motors vehicles that were sold by GM dealers and financed by the General Motors Acceptance Corporation(GMAC) GM dealers were the only agents and the insurance was for new and used cars that they sold. MIC is recognized as the first insurance company to offer comprehensive insurance on a mass basis in 1973-4. It also developed the General Motors Continuous Protection Plan. In the 1990's GMAC absorbed most of MIC"S duties so the MIC was eventually dissolved. Those are basically the words of Bud Nelson who was the liaison between the two insurance divisions of General Motors. This is an impressive. All these signs are a mystery. I have no exact information when they were made or for what purpose. Obviously as awards to some the companies' employees or decorations for offices seems logical. I bought dozens from a long time collector at an auction and many other lots of insurance signs were bought by other people. This sign seems to be made out of a pottery type of material. That little golden emblem on the bottom of the back mentions Burwood, which refers to a company and the only one I can find is one in Australia. I suppose Burwood is the company that made the sign. This sign was made for the Westchester Fire Insurance Company that started in 1837 but its origins are unknown. Most of these insurance companies were formed by business owners who pooled their money to insure each other in case a fire ruined someone's business. ... moreLittle did some of these early businessmen know, huge fires would ruin many sections of various large cities, especially Chicago, San Francisco, L.A, Boston and New York. When I went to the little town of Georgetown,CO, a beautiful mining town, I read that what made it unique is that it is one of the few western towns that never had a terrible fire to destroy its earliest structures. The Westchester Fire Insurance still exists and it insures various products, such as fire, bonding and casualty. It recently merged with ACE Indemnity and its headquarters is in Philadephia. This sign is quite heavy and is about 11.5"x13" The names, Crum&Forster are on there as is also the date of the beginning of the company. Crum and Forster refer to two men who started a financial business in 1896 that has become a large holding company, whatever that means. There are so many similar names in banks and insurance companies that it might be the same company. That company wa started in 1976 and was absorbed by the Phoenix Insurance Company in 1999. although this sign is molded plastic I think it might be from a different company but I truly have no idea. American General in 1964 which sold it to Zurich in 1989. After these sales sometimes the name is dropped, changed slightly or stays the same and this one stayed the same. At one time though the Maryland Casualty Company was called Maryland Casualty Company of Baltimore City but for what years is unclear. The company's headquarters are not in Baltimore now, not even in Maryland, but in Schaumburg, Illinois. It sells many kinds of insurance. This sign appears to be an attractive tile with the name of the company. A decoration that looks like a bogus coat of arms and also the kinds of insurance at the time it sold, casualty, fire, bonding and marine. Now here is an old metal sign but with a purpose to hold papers. The Standard Accident Insurance Company was a prominent business that was started in Detroit. Michigan in 1884. It built what looks to be a 7 story building in Detroit which since has been converted to housing. a few people on the internet have some very unkind things to say about the building which was built in 1920 and was considered quite a wonderful structure. I saw some insurance claim in 1952 so the company lasted at least 66 years. I assume that it merged into another company but it is amazing how limited information is on once large businesses, even with the internet helping the reseasrch immensely. The company in 1884 concentrated on accidents, especially railroad and building accidents as well as sickness claims. There is one good article about the company's intentions ... morewhen it was established. This all metal sign is about 8.5'x 6.5" x 1.5" the name of the company has been mostly worn because so many hands probably gradually wore down the letters when they picked up papers to take. This Hartford Fire Insurance Co brass and wood plaque is about 8 ½ by 12 inches. And the brass part is about 6 ¼ by 9 inches. The plaque reads This Agency Has Represented The Hartford Fire Insurance Company With Distinction Since 1930. And underneath has the name W.F. Teasley. The plaque shows a stag in relief. And underneath it in small letters it says Modeled By Lavra Gardin Fraser after Landseer. This was found in Nashville. TN. But I don’t know what city/state it originally came from. The wood has some small scratches along the top edge where it meets the brass– see last photo. And some scattered small scuffs and scratches, nothing major. The brass has a few dark spots and a little surface wear but is in overall pretty nice shape. Overall. Very nice vintage condition on this interesting Hartford Insurance item. RARE OLD BALOISE FIRE INSURANCE 10" X 7" PORCELAIN SIGN * FLYING DRAGON LOGO
Description Could be yours. a very hard to find vintage Baloise fire insurance advertising porcelain sign. This is a very rare and really old sign. It is a great small size measuring 10" by 7 1/4" and it has the wonderful convex shape that gives it depth. The graphics are just superb. It has a wonderful flying dragon logo holding a shield. As you can see the condition is not great however given the age of the sign it's really not that bad. I don't know exactly how old it is but I researched and found that the Baloise fire insurance company has been around since around 1863. So it could be very old. There is one rivet or screw head still attached in one of the mounting holes and you can see that it is quite old. I included a close up of it. The back of the sign has lots of rust too. The front is not great but the colors are ... morestill good. There are some chunks of porcelain missing and there are very small little cracks around those chips and also on the logo. Some of the edges of the sign are rusted out and quite jagged but again given the age of this sign it is to be expected. This is a rare find indeed and you probably won't find another like it. This would display nicely on any wall and in any collection. I included lots of pictures so you can see the exact condition. Here is some information I found on the company. From the 1920s. Great old sign in wood frame. Dark brown background. Lettering done in gold foil in classic“New York Times” style font. Lettering is basically intact, although there are some spots where the foil has ripped or worn away. Original wood frame shows lots of wear consistent with age. There is corrosion to the material under the glass on the left side. All original, including paper backing. Made by George Rutledge Co. Signs and Displays, Montclair, N.J. Great look to this piece. Antique Metal OWL Fire Insurance Sign Plaque I think Building bird 12 inch tall
I think this metal oval owl plaque is a fire Department mark or sign to be put on the outside of a building. I am not certain about that though. Your input is welcome. The owl is sitting on a feather quill. It measures 12 1/2 inch tall. 8 1/4 inch wide and about 1 1/4 inch deep. There is a small hole for hanging about one inch from the top. There are also two mounting holes on the back spaced 7 1/4 inches apart. There are no cracks. I see no makers name or other marks on it. Weighs 3 pounds 5 ounces.
