The mark is of heavy(3 lbs.cast iron construction and measure approximately 7.5" X 11.0" It has a red hydrant on a black background with gold trim. There is some paint loss and minor rusting. Which actually adds to the vintage look and feel of the mark. This is a very nice item which would make an excellent addition for any collector of firefighting or insurance memorabilia. American insurance company's fire marks were placed on the exterior of a house and were intended to discourage malicious arson by showing that the owner would not greatly suffer if the building were destroyed. Additionally. The mark stood as a guarantee to fire brigades that the insurance company which insured the house in question would reward handsomely the brigade extinguishing a blaze on the premises. A wonderful old piece of Fire Fighter's memorabilia! Plaques were mounted on buildings beginning in Victorian times. And the system was used throughout the years to confirm that the building was insured, and by whom. The firemen then would know what insurance company to contact for payment if they took care of a fire. At times, competing firemen would get into fist fights as to who was going to hande the fire and collect for the job. We purchased this plaque in an antique store and was given this historical information. Although we don't know the age. We have had it for about 25 years. It started out hanging in the garage, somehow made its way to his office, and it is now time for a new owner! Still in good vintage shape, has a few paint chips, scratches, a little dust but no cracks. A very interesting piece, and it does add charm ... moreto a room or shelves. When the American Revolutionary War began at the Battles of Lexington and Concord in April 1775. The colonial revolutionaries did not have a formal army, and relied on the militia-style Continental army to defend their freedom. I have never encountered this particular sign before from American Surety Co. for Burglary Insurance. As you can see they boast of $5,000,000 in Capital. The early 1900's saw the rise of hold-ups and bank jobs and the insurance companies cashed in on it by offering this insurance. This sign measures 8" x 11" and has a porcelain type quality to it, the letters have depth but I don't think the sign is porcelain, not heavy enough. Very nice ... morecondition, has a stain around the"T" in the word capital which i provided a close-up of. It appears to have never been hung, the hanging string has never been pulled away from the back of the sign. The construction is high quality, check out the close-up of the lettering surrounded by gold. The back is tin, has some surface rust but no damage. Really attractive sign here. Contribution was defined as that which is given by several hands for some common purpose symbolized by the companys clasped hands logo. Their mark had four hands crossed and clasped in a form commonly known as Jacobs Chair. As was the case with the Amicable Contributionship. The Philadelphia Contributionship also became known in America as the Hand in Hand. The clasped hands were of lead construction mounted on a wood shield. The first 100 were cast by John Snow. Who later recast the Liberty Bell. This is a heavy(over 3 lbs) cast iron fire mark which is in good condition. The mark has complete paint loss and has considerable amount of rusting. Which actually contribute to the vintage look and feel of this mark. Vintage State Farm Insurance Agent Sign - Two sided - Nice !
Up for bids today is a nice older State Farm Insurance agent sign. It is a very colorful sign and is two sided. Perhaps designed to suspend from a bracket. It measures 15.5" x 10.5" It has brass grommets in each corner for mounting. Just about the right size; not overbearing but large enough to be pleasing to the eye. It is in good condition with just enough wounds and scars to show it's age. Most of the damaged areas are located along the edges of the sign which is better than in the middle. Along the left edge of the yellow side, the paint is bubbling but not falling off. I have owned it for 4 or 5 years and it has not deteriorated at all. I would say it started rusting when it was left outside for several years in a row. I'm sure that it could be touched up with a matching color to make it look better but I've always ... moreliked the look it has. To me, it's age garners respect. I think it would be a super item for an agent of this company to place in his office. It is also nice that it can be reversed from time to time. Neither side is notably better than the other. I imagine there can't be a whole lot of these left out there to be had. It would also make a great gift to any sign collector. The sign will ship via USPS in a secure and protective manner.
