By the committee in charge of the Type Composition Machine Tournament, Held in Chicago, Ill. October 12-17, 1891. It consists of a number of reports. Listings, and letters about the comparison of typesetting machine technologies. It compares machine speeds to hand typesetting. Machines include The Rogers Machine, The Mergenthaler Machine, and The McMillan Machine. 1891 was very early times for machine typesetting, which became more competitive before settling on devices made by a few companies. In this book, the Committee provides several conclusions, including"That Machine composition is absolutely practicable, and very much cheaper than hand composition. Offered is an exceptionally fine copy of the American Type Founders Company's Specimen Book and Catalogue 1923. This is the famous American printing tome showing the typefaces and presses and related equipment and tools of the period in its 1.148 pages. With the exception of some slight whitish solvent spotting and streaking on the cover is in exceptional condition. And with the exception of occasional finger smudging there is no detectable writing or missing or cut out pages. Best I have seen. Typical slight fraying along cover edging, but binding is otherwise in exceptional condition and tight. Only discernible damage is a small inch and a half long tear at bottom of inner fold of rear flyleaf. 7 pounds. 8.3 ounces. 7-1/8 inches wide by 10-3/8 inches length by 2-7/8 inches thick. 1947 KELSEY PRINTING PRESS Catalog Type Fonts MERIDEN CONNECTICUT 75th Year EXC!
The strong vibrant Chinese red color of this catalog contrasted with the large black type of the printing and the picture of the man at the press make the cover very attractive. It has not faded because it has been in the original envelope since 1947( I think that would make it the 75th year) 1947 was the year that Frank E Pulley began as Chaplain of the Chapel of the USMA at West Point and this catalog was in some of his papers. I originally thought it was in mint condition as there is no writing and no tearing or fading of the pages and there are 2 inserts and it is in the original envelope. However when I studied it closely. I saw that the very last page seems to have been torn out. See the little remnant of it in the center of the catalog at the top. I think it must have been sent in along with the return envelope which most likely was ... moreincluded in the package. Otherwise everything looks excellent!
