In the past, I spent a great deal of time reconditioning these radios cosmetically, but due to the time to clean and recondition the RF-2200, it is hard to set aside the time necessary to restore these as is required. My wife worked on this particular cosmetic restoration and I think you will agree that she did a nice job with the appearance of the radio. Cosmetically. The radio is in good overall condition and is an excellent example of this 70's analog radio. We have sold about 65 of these restored RF-2200s on Ebay and this particular RF-2200 is one of the nicest examples of this radio to be offered on Ebay and it has the original antenna which is often found to be broken. The front panel looks to be above average ... morewith minor marking and the rest of the radio appears very nice with the exception of some light numbering on the rear battery cover. The whip antenna extends and retracts fully showing only slight bending. Many of the original whip antennas have been broken, bent, or severely damaged, but this one has no damage and about the least bending that I have ever seen on these RF-2200's as the antennas bend easily. Electronically. The RF-2200 operates just beautifully. This 8 band portable Panasonic RF-2200 receiver circa 1978 has long been considered a DX machine on medium wave, but also is a respectable unit on shortwave and FM as well. It is very common for these radios to have intermittent contacts on the band switches resulting in either poor or no reception on the AM and shortwave bands. The contacts on this radio were cleaned and allow the radio to operate perfectly. By looking at the condition this is in it shouldn't take a lot of TLC to get it perking again. This was part of Britain's secret"blind bombing" navigation system developed early in WW2. For the history of the GEE system. Read the excellent writeup in Wikipedia and elsewhere on the web. The Gee system was the first"hyperbolic" navigation system to use the difference of arrival times of synchronized transmitters located a distance apart to provide a"fix" for navigation. This tuning unit plugged into the R1355 receiver whose output fed a special cathode-ray oscilloscope showing the difference in arrival time ... moreof the signals. This is the same basic technology used in the late WW2 U.S. LORAN-A" system and later in the"LORAN C" system retired a few years ago when superceded by the GPS. This tuning unit converts the received 40 to 50 mHz frequency to approximately 7.5 mHz. with 4 pre-tuned"channels" It used tubes that were originally designed for VHF television before WW2. But hostilities would delay the rise of television until after 1945. Several tuning units were designed for the receiver as the British figured that the Germans, once figuring out what was going on, would try to jam the signals originating in the UK. This unit could be connected to a receiver that would tune to its output frequency and the tuning unit used as a VHF converter. This was done often after WW2 by British who bought surplus units and with them conjured up homemade wideband FM receivers to listen to BBC-TV audio and even made TV sets based on these tuning units.
