Southern poultry fountains and chicken waterers are not common. And this one, having an odd form and Bristol slip glaze is particularly unusual. Up for auction is a Cheater& BIllie Meaders 100th anniversary chicken waterer jug. It was made in 1992 celebrating the Meaders Pottery 100th anniversary 1892-1992. I attended that event at Mossy Creek campground in Cleveland. Ga November 7th 1992. This jug is 9 1/2 inches tall in very good condition with the Meaders green running glaze also called"tobacco spit" glaze. It does have 1 small chip on the bottom(see picture) where it stuck to the bottom of the kiln-other than that no cracks or other chips. It is number 1 of 100-inscribed on the front is"1 of 100 1892-1992 Meaders the name in pottery for 100 years and still turning" Incised on the bottom is Cheater& Billie Meaders signature 1992. Nice display piece certainly not a more commonly found red wing piece. Very highly desirable. Finding one of these in pristine condition is quite rare almost always found with a hairline or chips for what they were used for i'm sure the top was dropped on the bottom several time in its life. Lettering all still strong and easily read. Glaze is good over entire piece. Piece is approx. 7" in diam. and 10" tall, base is 1" tall at rim and 12" in diam. weights approx. 9 LBS. Piece will be safely packed. In the front there is a hairline crack(pictured) that runs from the bottom to the top end, On back there is a chip( pictured) and a hairline crack. Wonderful antique chicken waterer. Albany slip, beautiful color, an unfortunate chip on the handle, no cracks. approximately 11 inches tall and 9 inches in diameter. Just guessing but looks to hold about 2 gallon of water. The two pictures of the hole in the side is more the color of the piece of pottery. This is an unusual stoneware jug with a spigot hole that I have never seen before. The glaze is chocolate brown in color. Measurements are 9" tall not including handle x 7 1/2" wide. There are a couple glaze chips. But there are no cracks or repairs. There are fingerprints on the bottom as shown where the maker had glaze on their fingers when they were painting the jug.
