Antique Primitive Rocking Chair Woven Splint Seat All Original
Antique primitive rocking chair with original woven splint seat. The back has four splats. There are two rungs each. On the front and sides, and one on the back. It stands 34" high, 26" deep, 19" wide, and 16" from the floor. The arms are 8 1/4" across. The right back leg has a 3" split from the top rung up. There is some wear to the splint seat, but it is strong and can be used. The patina on the wood and splints is really nice. Paypal is fine if you are having this shipped. Small nails reinforcing handle with two hand tied knots(one bottom one on side of handle) It very finely woven with 16 ribs& 15 per side 31 ribs total. Thats a lot of ribs for any basket but especially a Pa basket. I was told by one of the top middle atlantic basket and folk art collectors the hand tied knots where indicators of a moravian made basket( he owns 2,300 baskets) This item was purchased from the Bethelhem Leigh County Pa area, it's moravian influenced with skilled tight weaving and hand tied knots. Only flaw I see is a couple split splints interior of basket. No gaping holes or gaps caused by breakage. Measures rim diameter is 7" diameter. The Antique Wall Hanging Basket is heavily painted with mustard yellow paint that has crackled with age. Handle is 3/4" wide and is meant for hanging upon the wall. I believe this basket is circa 1800s. This Hanging Basket has a Bulbous Half Shaped Body. The Antique Woven Wall Hanging Basket has a Flat Woven Back for resting flat to the wall surface. This is a hard to find shape. There is a break on a cane on the corner that I have taken a closeup of. I am not an expert on this type of item so the information is based on what I have been advised. GIANT Vintage Oak Splint Handwoven Basket; Superb
Here is a superb early oak splint handwoven basket. This giant basket measures 14 inches in overall length and 12 inches wide. Handle to base is another 13.5 inches. The depth excluding the handle is 7 inches. The basket is expertly woven with only three small breaks in the interior base. No other breakage is noted on the perimeter. The handle is firmly seated and woven tightly to the base. The basket is rectangular at top which then transitions to a curved bottom that then curves to a flat base. It is made of woven ash splint with sweetgrass around the outside of the rim and sweetgrass wrapped with splint for the handles. One side of a handle has the sweetgrass pulled out a bit; see the picture, but still holds well. It has a flower decoration made with sweetgrass and splint and stained bright green. For sale is a rectangular shopping basket made of splint and twisted grass. The handles are twisted grass and the basket rim sweetgrass over the ash. It was native made for the tourist trade probably in the Northeast. It was probably made in the 1950's or 60's. This rectangular basket has very bright multi-coloured dyed splints. There has only been slight fading on the outside. It is in good condition with no major breaks. It is slightly out of square but still stand up well.
