Old Round Great Lakes Indian Splint Ash Basket w/ Liner Dated 1943
Up for auction is a beautifully woven old Great Lakes Indian splint ash basket. Made by a talented Native American weaver, probably from right here in Michigan. It has attractive details, with its round base and a round rim, which was finished off with double split ash wraps. The basket has a very nice aged patina. The original owner made a lining for the inside(perhaps she used it as a sewing basket) from a couple of old business letters dated 1943. Normally I wouldn't have kept this lining, and it doesn't hide any flaws to the basket, but it's unusual to be able to date one of these vintage splint ash baskets this precisely. A very nice old Great Lakes Indian basket! This splint ash basket. As noted, is a nice largish size and was intended for actual use. It measures 9" in diameter and 5" deep. This 160 page softcover book was published by Interweave Press in 1986. Its title is"Splint Woven Basketry" And the author is Robin Taylor Daugherty. The book has no markings inside or on the covers. There is a small stain on bottom edge of the last page or two that may have come from moisture but it is barely able to be seen, and the book appears to be'as new' The book has an Introduction and an Index and a Glossary. It has five Chapters. Three chapters are devoted tot he basket patterns(Ribbed, Plaited and Spoked) and one is devoted to Finishing Touches(handles, rims, etc. The first Chapter is'Getting Ready" The two'Contents' pages are shown in the third and fourth pictures above and from those pictures one can read the sections of the book and the names of the projects. Here is nice. Lightly used, s plit ear headstall with a pair of cotton reins with scissor snaps. The leather is in very good condition and ready to go- Super soft cotton reins. They were frayed at the end so I braided it. It has a western shanked curb bit with a leather curb strap that is attached to the headstall. The bit has some teeth marks and other marks on it but it certainly still useable. I'm also tossing in a regular horse size halter with a fleece noseband- its older but good for baths or as a spare. Last is a pair of Medium Bar F splint boots. Velcro is great. They have a professional repair on the fasteners- my pup chewed them off but they're good now! VTG ANTIQUE PENOBSCOT CHIPPEWA NATIVE AMERICAN INDIAN LARGE BASKET CURLED SPLINT
This is a wonderful Large Penobscot or Chippewa American Indian curly sewing basket with lid. The basket about 11" in diameter. 10 1/2" tall with the lid, and 8 1/2" to top of basket without lid. The opening is 6 1/2" at the top. The condition is very good. I see three broken points on the lid and one broken point on the bottom. The is a tiny broken piece on on of the tips of the point. I see about 8 broken small pieces on the sides of the basket. They are mostly there just broken. There is fading on the outside and the lovely colors are only visible from the inside. There is dust on the basket in the pictures. But I have removed most of it. I am shipping this in a heavy box to guarantee there is no bending in the box to damage the basket so the shipping cost if for a 2-3 pound package. Chippewa" is written in pencil ... moreon the bottom of the basket. I am not sure if it was there originally or added later. Email me with any questions. This Penobscot Sewing Basket has all the bells and whistles. Nice large size, good color curls and fine workmanship. The curl colors are red and purple with fading over time on the outside which one would expect. The cover lays flat over the top with a rim that fits tightly inside. There is a round pull made from very thin splats wound into a circle. A few of the curls have minor damage which is no way detracts from its appearance; they are visible in the photos, so please look them over closely. Penobscots would make their baskets. With the entire family being involved in the process, and travel around the state to sell their wares. Initially, these baskets were for everyday use, and sold in the local markets and to tourists. Over the years, different influences have resulted in more creative types of baskets, for instance, the Victorian age resulted in the use of curls and brighter colored dyes in the work. Antique hand-woven rectangular ash wood splint country market gathering basket with bentwood handle. And unusual captured(attached) lid for security of the goods that were carried. 13” x 7” x 10” useful-size market basket. Exact age and origin unknown. But the basket was used by my grandmother, an early 20 th century(1900s-1930s) farm wife in the Catskills of New York State. Rectangular flat-bottomed basket of narrow 1/4” wide splint strips woven over 1-3/8” wide ribs in“over-under“ pattern. Wide splint checkerboard-weave lid and basket bottom. The captured lid slides up and down on the handle and cannot fall off or be removed. Keeping goods safe inside. Rims are wrap-woven onto top of basket and side of lid. Color and grain indicate this is ash. Specific type unknown. Wood is richly mellowed. Very good overall antique condition. Good craftsmanship ... morewith even weaving. And the wood of this basket has a handsome patina. The captured lid slides easily. There are a few breaks to the splint on the corner and bottom of the lowest splint row and two breaks to the edge of the rim. These are antique splints. So they are brittle. See photos for condition. Rare, Large, and Very Old Finely Woven Maliseet Indian Lidded Splint Ash Basket
This is one of those. I can't believe I'm selling this but. baskets. Up for auction is a very old medium-large sized Northeastern Indian splint ash storage basket. This basket has terrific detailing, with its fine and even splints and its nice sturdy solid construction. The basket features a bentwood ash frame, its original lid, and ash weavers filling in the sides. The weaver added in wrapped criss-crossed handles on the lid, a hallmark of Maliseet basket weaving. Two more little handles are on the sides. The base of the basket is oblong, morphing to an oval rim. This is definitely a very old basket, made in the 1800s. This was one of those storage baskets the Indians would peddle door-to-door to the white settlers of the region to earn a few dimes of cash money, and as you can imagine not many of these baskets survived. This beautifully ... morewoven old Maliseet Indian basket is truly good enough to be a worthy addition to a museum collection. The basket. As noted, was made for actual storage, measuring 11½" x 8½" across at the base and is 10" deep to the top of the handles on the lid. It's in just outstanding condition for its age, with the following flaws to point out: Although all handles are still attached to the basket, one on the side and one on the lid have each become unattached on one end. And there are a few tiny pieces of missing splint throughout the body of the basket. But considering its advanced age, this basket is really in phenomenal shape. I have taken lots of photos of all sides so you can see its appearance from all angles. A beautiful and unusual antique Indian basket! The handle knots are somewhat different than any I can find. However. This is a very sturdy, well made weave with no cracks or breaks.
