Miniature Great Lakes Indian Splint Ash Market Basket w/ Colorful Old Dyes
Up for auction is a beautifully woven old Great Lakes Indian miniature splint ash market basket. Made by a talented weaver from Wisconsin or right here in Michigan. We do know it is from the Great Lakes area because no sweetgrass was used in its construction. This basket has all the bells and whistles that an experienced weaver could add. Just like the big ones, this little mini has a bentwood handle which was carved and notched to fit around the rim. The basket also has a bentwood rim with the whittle marks still visible, wrapped with narrow ash splints. The basket is old enough to have developed a very nice aged patina, and you can clearly still see the pretty colors the weaver used to decorate her creation. A beautiful small Great Lakes Indian basket! This splint ash basket. As noted, is a miniature version of the classic large market ... morebaskets. It measures just 5¼" x 4" 3" deep, and 6" tall to the top of the handle. This beautiful basket is in outstanding condition for its age, which I estimate to be from around 1950 or so. Some dirt smudges on one end, but I really don't consider that a flaw. See photos, as they give a true picture of the basket's features and condition. This small Great Lakes Indian ash basket displays very well and will make a terrific addition to someone's collection. Old Medium-Sized Cherokee Indian Splint Oak Gathering Basket w/ Walnut Stripes
Up for auction is a beautifully crafted medium-sized vintage Cherokee Indian berry or egg gathering basket. It has beautiful detailing. Its most distinctive feature is wrapped oak pedestal base on the underside for the basket to rest on- it was probably made this way to hold the basket up off the ground. The basket also features a whittled bentwood oak handle. And a bentwood oak frame. The basket also has three of the unique Cherokee locking splints- one on the base. One on the rim, and one on the pedestal foot. The weaver also added dyes of walnut and butternut as accents. This beautifully woven vintage Cherokee Indian splint oak basket will make a terrific addition to someone's collection. The basket. As noted, is a nice medium size for one of these Cherokee oak baskets. It measures 7" across at the rim, 5" deep, and 9" ... moretall to the top of the handle. The basket is in really nice condition, with no breaks, holes, or missing splints, including on the rim or the pedestal base. Its only possible flaw is that if you look carefully at the inside of the basket you can see some faint water marks, but this doesn't detract at all from the basket's awesome display quality. This is a wonderful Early 20th Century Adirondack type Child's Log Rocking Chair w/ Woven Splint Seat and Back. It measures approximately 25" high x 23" long(rocker length) x 17-1/2" wide. It is made of mixed woods including some figured maple. The child's sized rocking chair is in great estate condition. Remaining solid and in perfect working order. Antique 19th C Splint Miniature NE Woodlands Indian Basket
Here is a sweet splint basket. Probably made by one of the Northeast Woodland Indian groups and dating to the second half of the 19th century. Basket measures 6 ¼” long x 4 ½” wide x 3” tall. Condition is very good throughout the basket, but there are three missing rim stitches and some discoloration inside it. Bottom and corners all intact. Still displays very well. Traces of red, yellow and black splints throughout the body, which has just a fantastic patina! This would make a fine addition to any basketry collection!

This large basket is made from splint and features a rim of pine needle. This basket appears to be Native American from the Penobscot region of Maine. The basket is in very good condition with minimal breakage which is common from a basket of this period. The basket is 7" tall at the rim with an additional 4+ inches of height added by the handle. The basket is 12" in diameter. This is a fine example of basketry and a wonderful addition to any collection. This is a recent purchase from a local estate. A wonderful miniature split oak buttock basket 3 1/4" This is an early 20th century piece. This piece was purchased over 80 years ago from a woman's estate in Manitou Springs. Colorado. This sweet little basket is 3 1/4" in width, 3" in height and 3 1/4" across. The center opening is approx. 2 3/4" It has 14 ribs, 1/16" split wood and 5/16" wide handle. It has 2 blue 1/2" stripes one on each side. It is in great structural condition with a beautiful patina. The brace appears to have never been used and still has its original paper tag attached. The piece measures approximately 16" tall and the foot portion measures 7.5" from front to back. The foot portion does adjust with three wing nuts. There is some light wear to this finish in a few spots. But the brace appears to be in very good condition overall with no cracks, breaks, splits or other problems. Vintage Cherokee Split Oak Splint Large Basket -may be the work of Amanda Smoker
Up for bid is a nice large cherokee split oak basket. The dimensions are 8 3/4" at the base x 10 1/2" high x 10"wide at the rim. The widest part of the basket is 11 1/2" The darker oak splits are dyed with walnut dye and the lighter splits are natural. The basket has aged beautifully. The lashing around the rim is intact and is not loose. The oak rim is solid and sturdy. The weaving splits are in good shape but they have cosmetic blemishes. I've taken pics from every side. Top and bottom of the basket. View and judge for yourself. There is some white paint on the basket as you can see in the pics. It seems to be a water based paint. I removed some of the paint using warm water and soap just to see if it would come off. As you can see in the pics, I left the rest of the paint on. The rest may come off or it may not. ... moreThe only major deficiency that is noticeable is that there are a few oak splits broken on the bottom of the basket, about 1 1/2" square. I'm going out on a limb here and say that this basket looks very similar to the works of renowned cherokee basketmaker Amanda Smoker. But without documentation to prove it, it is just my honest opinion. I estimate that this basket was made in the 1950's. I know my baskets as I am a maker and collector of white oak split baskets. Up for bid is a great vintage picnic basket. Farm fresh from an estate auction. It measures 9 1/2" tall, 12" wide and about 16" long. It looks like it could be split oak, but I am not positive. It is woven and I believe called splint style. It has wear, as expected, ... morefor a basket that was used, but overall very good. You can see light marks and a few spots of a piece of slat partly broken off. The 2 swinging handles have a little looseness but still secure. The hinged lid is made of multiple slat of wood. The shape of the lid is not exact to the opening of the basket, as pictured. Inside the lid is a round hook with a string attached. It was likely attached to something inside to hold it up when retrieving goodies from it. Even with some imperfections, this basket displays very well. You can just imagine it filled with fried chicken, biscuits and all of the trimmings for a fabulous picnic lunch by the lake! If only times were that simple these days! Abenaki style antique basket New Hampshire Vermont black ash splint sewing herb?
This basket was purchased in an antique store in the 1970s or so. It has been in the family ever since. At that time the store told the buyer it was an Abenaki(New Hampshire and Vermont and environs) made basket. A basketmaker has confirmed this to us and it is certainly in the style of certified Abenaki baskets. The basket is in very good condition except that one of the side handles is missing and one side loop is broken. It is all there. Just split open at the center of the loop. See pictures) Overall, the basket measures about 11 inches across- outside diameter. The base is about 5 1/4 inches square and forms a pedestal for the round top. There are two attached interior small baskets- perhaps for sewing or herbs/spices? The two pictures of the smaller baskets are of each side- not the same small basket in both pictures. EX!! - ULTRA STURDY & STRONG SPLINT BASKET FISHING CREEL - EX!!
This is exceptionally strong and well made Splint basket creel with a hinged solid wood(not ply wood) lid similiar to some of the creels made by some of the east coast native american tribes. This one is probably not real old- maybe 40's or 50's. This one is very well made and in very nice condition and comes with a complete"Red Head" shoulder strap. This is an excellent example for the collector. I've been collecting creels for years and just recently realized I'm totally out of space to display them. I counted them a couple of weeks ago and find that I have over 400 of them. I guess I've got to move a few of them on down the road so my wife and I will have enough space to move around in the house a little. Of course I'm exagerating a bit but you can imagine how much space that many creels takes up. I'll ... morelist a few creels today and more periodically as my schedule permits. Great Wolf Lodge Plush Wolf with Boo Boo Bandage& Splint by Petting Zoo 1994 For your consideration is an adorable plush wolf from the Great Wolf Lodge resort. He has very soft gray and white plush. He measures about 12 1/2" in the sitting position. He has plastic blue eyes and a black flocked nose. Above his left eye is an embroidered bandage(band-aid) And tied around his neck and hand is a tan cloth bandage that is a splint. Sorry for the photo the splint slipped off his arm. The lodge logo is also embroidered on his chest. He has his sewn in tag and is by Petting Zoo 1994. You would think he was new based on his condition and not almost 20 years old.
