PETER. ANNE AND WILLIAM BATEMAN 1801 3 delightful spoons aprox 4.75 inches long and aprox combined weight of 33 grams. Normal surface scratches. And wear typical of objects of this age. Hester Neden or Needham was baptised in London on 7 October 1708. The daughter of John Neden or Needham. On 20 May 1732 she married a gold chain maker and called John Bateman. During their marriage. She gave birth to five children; Letitia, Ann, Peter, John and Jonathan. John Bateman died of consumption( in 1760. Leaving his tools to his wife in his will. She took over the family business and registered her first at the in 1761. Simply"HB" in script. From the time up to the late 1770s. Not much Bateman work is known, possibly because she was supplying pieces other silversmiths that were subsequently overstamped with their marks. After about 1774. ... moreHester Bateman worked to build up the business at 107 Bunhill Row, London with her sons John and Peter. They used the latest technology to produce their silverware as cheaply as possible and compete with other companies using. They used thin gauge silver and machines to punch and pierce it. The family specialised in in a style and she expanded their range to include many goods such as. Jugs, Salt cellars, wine labels, trays and ink wells. It is characterised by bright-cut. Beading around edges and piercing. Bateman retired in 1790 and was succeeded by her sons. She died on 16 September 1794 and was buried at St Luke's. London. The business that Hester Bateman had built up and run for thirty years was taken over by her sons Peter and Jonathan. They registered a hallmark with their initials(PB" over"IB" in December 1790. But Jonathan died in April 1791. Jonathan's widow Ann entered a hallmark with her brother-in-law Peter(PB" over"AB" and worked for the company until 1805. We believe this is probably a German piece. Or maybe Italian. Based on when this particular form was in vogue, this piece dates to the late 1600s or early 1700s, probably pre-1720s at the very least. At its youngest possible age it's pushing 300 years old, and it could very well be older. This is a great piece, with a wide base and an attractive design. The silver of the cellar portion is fairly thick, and the piece is well constructed. This piece is in good overall condition. There is some surface wear. Which is to be expected as this piece has not been buffed. There are some small splits to the highest points of the base, but nothing on the actual ... moresalt holding portion. National Silver Co. Slotted Tomato Serving Spoon
This silver plated reticulated spoon or server was manufactured by National Silver Company and bear the manufacturer's mark(S.E.B. E.P.N.S. on the back of the handle. S.E.B. stands for"Samuel E. Bernstein" and was the mark for the company that existed from 1890 to 1903 when it was acquired by National Silver Company. E.P.N.S" stands for"Electro Plated Nickel Silver" National continued to use the S.E.B. mark in the first few decades of the 20th century. Pattern name is unknown to me. The spoon has a lovely raised scroll pattern and bellflower motif surrounding an elongated oval and surface has a subtle hammered texture. The"bowl" is has an interesting pierced design.
