Up for auction an Extremely Nice and seldom seen CIRCA 1935(PFLUEGER) FOUR BROS. NO.2445"RIVLAKE" 5 FT. 2-PIECE SPLIT BAMBOO BAIT CASTING ROD WITH THE ORIGINAL LABELED BAG AND*RARE* ORIGINAL FACTORY HANG TAG. Any rods from Pflueger or from Pflueger-owned Four Brothers are very hard to find and are seldom offered for sale. They never produced their own rods, relying totally on other production rodmakers to supply them and never really had any impact at all on the rod market. This is actually the first"Rivlake" model I've ever seen. Built exclusively for Four Brothers by the Montague Rod& Reel Co. from 1934 to 1939. Because this example comes with the rare factory hang tag, which just happens to be dated April of 1935, it's likely from around the same time period. The reel seat is stamped with the"Trade ... moreMark 4 BROTHERS 4" logo, along with"No.2445 RIVLAKE- Made In U.S.A. Interestingly, the RIVLAKE model name is double-stamped. I've added a photo of the original listing from Pflueger's 1935 catalog. Built with beautifully flamed Tonkin cane and comes equipped with full agatine guides& tip top, welted and serrated nickel silver ferrules, NS winding check, patented Montague sliding twist-lock reel seat, solid cork tournament grip& foregrip and wound orange silk tipped in black, with full intermediates. Rod is in solid Very Fine+ condition, showing only very light evidence of use. A beautiful example. Bamboo is absolutely perfect, with no splits, cracks or delamination whatsoever. Both sections are the correct length and are arrow-straight. Original varnish remains very nice. All wraps are solid and complete. All guides, tip top, ferrules(pop nicely) and winding check are excellent. Reel seat looks virtually unused and is boldly stamped. Solid cork grip and foregrip are extra nice. VINTAGE SOUTHBEND ALUMINUM SPUN CASTING ROD W/CANVAS CASE & SHAKESPEAR REEL
Up for auction is a vintage Southbend spin casting rod with a canvas case plus a Shakespeare casting reel. The case is in really good condition considering it's age. And will last many more years. The rod is made of solid spun aluminum. This combination is 71 years old. My grandpa bought it for me when I was 9. It breaks down at the handle. As the pictures show, and is 58-1/2" long with 4 ferrels. Each fellrel is wrapped, and there isn't any fraying. The reel is a 1960AS CRITERION DE LUXE level winding reel. It will accomodate 100 yards of line. Or 50 yards with the arbor in place. There a adjustable casting drag knob. One handle is missing. A matching one could be found in a repair shop I'm sure. The original box is there. The original small care booklets and instruction sheets explaining how to remove and attach the arbor ... moreand line is there plus the ley to remove the handle and separate the arbor. The rod shows almost no wear. The cork handle is dirty with a few. And could be cleaned if the buyer knows how to do it. The reel has a few scratches. This is a Very Nice Penn Peer 309 Level Wind Ocean Casting Reel in Very Nice Working Condition: all mechanics work great to the best that I can tell. I might want to say the drag washer on the star drag have some play left. But are not as adjustable as when new, i.e. you can still adjust the drag, you just don’t have as much ability as before the washers were slightly compressed. Don’t really notice any rust or corrosion on the reel. It is decently clean with just a little dust or grease stain in some of the crevices and other than that, shows only minor signs of use. On the bottom of the reel foot the original owner has engraved his name and city and state. The number on the bottom of the reel foot is 30-66. This reel is ready to catch fish. Pictures show well. Instruction manual, warranty card, and parts tube. The reel has only a little wear on top of the rims, with clean unscratched side plates. Cranks smoothly but stiffly, and all mechanical functions work well. I removed the old line and wiped off some grease that had oozed out of the level wind mechanism. When I pulled the face plate cover off(easily done by loosening the thumb screws) I found, sure enough, that the gears had been packed overly full with thick blue green grease. You'll want to clean off the gears and re-lube this reel if you want to use it for fishing. The box has darkened a bit and has a bumped corner. The 36 page instruction manual had been folded.
