First a 3D computer drawing was made of a beat up one and the damaged letters were corrected. Then a wax model was made. A casting, a silicone mold. more wax models, more castings, polish, well here it is. They may need a little filing here and there to fit in properly. While this whole thing developed a friend wanted one to wear so one was done in Silver. It also seemed like a good idea to make one for a key chain in Silver. Anyway the Silver ones are the lighter ones. The darker ones are the steel ones and the polished finish can be aged to match the patina of the headset it is going on or just kept nice and shiny. Here we have a Vintage Cone-Shaped Steel Plumb Bob with a Brass Top Cap. This turned steel vintage bob is 2-7/8" L with the shoulder area being 1-3/8" in diameter. The bob comes with a very nice casted steel wall-spacer that has a chamfered top with dome center. The underside of the spacer is stamped with a'35' and anchor logo. Both in circles. This Vintage Piece Round Gauge Block Spacer Set Steel Metal working Tool has been gently restored. What does gently restored mean? The overall objective is to preserve as much as the old tool or item with a good balance of lifetime patina as possible without the use of power tools. The first step is to dismantle the tool down to individual parts. Metal is typically initially cleaned using mineral oil. Or a weak solution of washing soda and water and if necessary brief burst of electrolysis on to remove and or convert rust to black oxide. For other metals such as brass a brief immersion in a weak solution of food grade citric acid may be necessary. Whichever method is best, a scotch brite plastic cleaning pad is used with water so the underlying metal is not damaged. A heat gun is immediately used to blow dry and eliminate moisture to which ... moreis followed by a hand rubbed coat of a mix of orange and mineral oil to seal the pores. It is often necessary to repeat this step until a satisfactory result is achieved. After letting the oil“soak in” for a day or so, the item is wiped cleaned then hand rub in a purchased but diluted orange oil bees wax mix to seal it. For wood a weak solution of oil soap and water is used to remove grime, old oils and dirt which is air or blowed dry with a heat gun. This is followed by a hand rub of“feed and wax" Normally all other materials are simply wiped clean with a dry or slightly damp cloth as appropriate. If the situation requires it, a soft brass bristle brush or“0000” steel wool is ocassionaly used. A few items should be noted. The first is this gentle process may not remove all rust or dirt.
