Outstanding Gorham "Josephine" Finely Engraved Coin Silver Crumber
Marked"Patent 1855" and"Coin. this 11 1/8" long, heavy, 4.2 T. oz. crumber is an example of one of Gorham's earliest line patterns, Josephine. It is a leaf and scroll design with. In this instance, a double monogram. There is an Old English"S" on the obverse and a feathered script"JB" on the reverse. The overall item is appealing for its scale. Absence of wear, sense of proportion, decorative scalloped rim on the serving end, and fine finish, but the engraved surface of the blade transforms this from a mechanistic piece to an artful one. There is a central oval which is finely engraved with a waterside scene that incorporates a boat. Hills, small figures, and a structure with a tower or silo attached to it. This is all surrounded with an equally finely bright cut, engraved and engine turned design ... morethat creates an elaborate but proportionate frame for the central"picture. All in all. This is really two items in one, first a utilitarian table server, and secondly an etching on silver. The latter aspect of such pieces alas can be overlooked when the former aspect is the first consideration, but the true genius of this piece is in the engraving. It does have plating wear-through on both sides of the bowl. The pattern is crisp. Clear and strong and features a high relief devil's head on the top of the handle- a classic Victorian piece. Gorham first brought out Imperial Chrysanthemum, a sterling pattern, in 1894. The design is a lush floral one, with an hourglass shaped cartouche for a monogram. The pattern is still being made today, with many new servers, however, much of the new production is in silverplate! The crumber offered here is silverplate. This difference can cause endless confusion, and it is important to distinguish between plated and sterling pieces. Dating a silverplated piece such as a crumber in Imperial Chrysanthemum is tricky, as the crumber is not ... moretechnically a modern piece, but the silverplated pieces in this pattern tend to be much newer than the 1894 patent date! The table crumber is a flatware piece that has reinvented itself in this century. Meant for a time when laundry was both tedious and time consuming, the crumber helped to extend the life of tablecloths by removing the debris of food following meals. Crumbs were swept into the crumber using a napkin or a brush. Aa simple little experiment will show why brushes were not used for every type of crumbs: put bits of beef, chicken, broccoli and cabbage into a brush and see how it smells in three days. But today the crumber becomes the enchilada server, the egg roll lifter, the device of choice for lasagna and meatloaf. The crumber offered here measures about 10 1/4. This is not a piece of new silver. It shows the patina of possibly many years of careful use. There are the light scratches which constitute normal patina. There is no monogram. Silver is softly lustrous. There is a small amount of light silver loss on the blade, visible on close inspection; thereis a pit on the blade, the result of prolonged exposure to salt or sugar. Large and heavy weight sterling silver fish server made by Tiffany& Company. The server is done in the Palm pattern which was first produced in 1871. The entire piece is covered with a handsome gold wash. The blade is beautifully hand-engraved with ivy leaves and vines. The server is marked on the reverse with Tiffany& Co. Sterling Pat. 1871 and the letter M for the president of Tiffany. Edward Moore, who was director of the company from 1873 to 1891. There is some wear to the gold wash in a few places. Antique Paper Mache Crumber, Decorated with Chinese Scene, probably 19th Cent
We have for sale a gorgeous lacquered antique paper mache crumber. Most probably from the mid to late 19th century. This is beautifully decorated with tones of gold. Green, and bronze. The scene is of a couple in a garden. There are more people and two fences in the background and a tree on a mound overhanging the scene. This is in good condition for it's age. There are some very small flakes of lacquer missing along the edges. And a tiny. Small crack at the top. I don't know if you can see it, it doesn't go through to the back. Vintage Carved and Painted 2 Piece Crumber-Oriental Motifs!
This was purchased at a country auction. It's a two piece crumber that appears never to have been used. It was probably a souvenier from the Far East.The flowers and leaves are carved and painted and there are Oriental characters also carved on the inside of the tray. The tray part measures about 7 1/2" wide and 6" high. And the other piece measures about 8 3/4" long.

You are looking at a beautiful piece that belonged to my grandmother. It was always in the china closet, and I loved it, so she gave it to me, along with many other things, now I just have to make some room. Since posting this item, I have learned that this is a silent Butler, or a crumber, we both loved it for it's beauty. It is made of porcelain, approx. 6" wide, and 3 1/2" tall The handle is approx. 5" long. The handle and the bowl together are approx.10" wide. The handle does screw off, there appears to have been an emblem or flower that was on the inside, that has worn off, except for a small amount, please see photo's. there is a brass ring on the top and one on the bottom, so that when you close it, the brass meets together.
