ANTIQUE ADDERLY GRANDMOTHER'S WARE CHELSEA GRAPE HNDLD. 10" SQUARE PLATE
Up for auction is a ca. 1860's ironstone Adderly Grandmother's Ware square handled plate in their beautiful lustre grape pattern. The grapes are done in a gorgeous shade of violet or periwinkle. Adderly began making this ware in the 1840's. This measures approximately 10" in width measuring from the edge of one handle to the edge of the opposite handle. This has a very faint mark on the back of the piece, it is an embossed anchor, but I cannot decipher the wording. I have read that most Grandmother's Ware Chelsea was not marked, so if anyone out there can provide any information relating to this ware, I would greatly appreciate hearing from you! This plate is in very good condition. Especially taking into consideration it's over one hundred and sixty years old! There are no chips, cracks, nicks or repairs. It has ... moreone tiny rough area on the back side on the edge of one handle(see third photo for a close-up of this) this looks like a build-up of glaze in this one spot, it's smaller than a pea, and another tiny rough spot on the very edge of the piece. There are some light wear areas along the center indented area and some minor darkened spots showing on the front, all of this is very typical to this ware. Though not perfect, this piece is nonetheless in beautiful shape, it would add a touch of elegance to any table setting, this is the perfect size to serve cookies or little tarts. This is true depression blue dinnerware, not as dark as a contemporary cobalt blue… but really striking in color and simplicity of design. I think this plate was used as a dinner plate because there are utensil marks that can be seen. I would say they are minor. The plate measures about 10 ¾ inches in diameter.
