Old Blue/White Plate, Dr. Syntax Bound to Tree by Highwaymen, 10.5 diam
From a local estate is this old blue and white 10.5” diameter Staffordshire plate with a wonderful scene entitled“Doctor Syntax bound to a tree by Highwaymen” The plate is marked on the back with a blue printed title“Doctor Syntax Bound to a Tree by Highwaymen” There are no other markings on the plate. I am not sure of the age. But since there is no England mark, I assume it is 19th century. The plate has nice weight, and I do not think it is early 1800s, but probably 2nd or 3rd or early 4th quarter 19th century. Condition: generally very good. There is one glaze flaw(perhaps a burst glaze bubble) on the front. Just to the lower left of the women on horses along the scene border. When the plate is tilted, I do see some very light scratches(faily minimal) on the front surface. A 7 1/2 inch salad plate and a 10 3/4 inch dinner plate are in this two piece lot. Both of these plates have the same Chinese Boquet pattern in a orange/rust color. This was made by Herend of Hungary and is stamped with Herend's logo on the bottom in blue on both pieces. The small saucer has been stamped with the number 1518/WBOS and in black appears a tiny number 151. The number 1518 is also embossed onto the bottom. The other larger plate is marked with the same Herend logo but its numbers are 1527/WBOS and a black number 5. The number 1527 is also embossed onto the bottom of this plate as well. There is a sticky substance on the bottom of this plate that will come off with cleaning. They both have ... morescalloped edges trimmed in gold and are in pretty good condition. Both have some minimal color loss on the pattern and the gold rims has some color loss as well. There are no chips. Cracks or crazing. Exceptional 10" Ridgway Flow Blue Plate w/ Turkey Bee Hive Mark c. 1900's VHTF
Presented here for your consideration is a wonderful flow blue plate from the Ridgways Pottery out of the Staffordshire area of England. The plate is 10" in diameter and is marked on the back with the Ridgway Bee Hive mark c. 1891-1920. There is also a potter's mark of what looks to be an impressed 07 over 7 but the impression is quite filled in with the glossy clear coat finish making it hard to discern. Condition of the plate is exceptional- if not MINT! showing no chips. Cracks, hairlines or known restoration. When tilted in bright light I cannot see even one utensil mark from previous use- just an incredible clear glow. There is crazing to the clear coat glaze as is found in almost all high-fired wares using this type of glossy finish. The plate highlights the wild turkey in the plate's bowl with floral decoration around ... morethe plate edge. The plate is scalloped and shows a rolled texture to the near rim edge.
