Well the best I can come up with is that this is an amputation knife or blade. Dont know what else to call it. It came with other medical instruments dating around 1900 or before. I'm happy to offer this great 1930's surgical scalpel and three blades up for auction. This knife was designed by Rudolph Beaver and patent 1916244 was granted in 1933. See the design and patent writup at this link I found this knife in a box I purchased at auction many years ago. The knife has some shelf wear but will clean up very nicely. It is marked"BEAVER" 7" on one side and"PAT.NO.1915244" on the other. the blades have some corrosion on them but they too should clean up okay if you want to. Estate sale find! Very old 19th century i believe medical surgen amputation knife. The knife is stamped with the makers name' LENTZ& SONS' The knife has a total length of 12 inches with a long slender double edged blade length of 7 3/4 inch. Appears to be a black ebony wood checkered handle 4 1/4 inches long 1/2 inch wide. I would rate this in very good condition considering it's age. There is an age crack in the handle showing in the last picture that is pretty minor, the handle is solid and tight to the blade, some dark rust stains on the blade or beautiful aged patina whichever you prefer to call it. Blade looks full length with no nicks or chips. This is guaranteed by me as an all original antique knife not a reproduction. This small knife is 3 1/2 inches long over all and has about a 2 inch long blade(blade could use a little sharping) The entire knife is made of one piece of surgical steel that is 5/16 of a inch thick! Handle has 2 deep finger cuts and a ridged thumb rest for secure grip. When I got this it did not have a sheath but was told it did come with one. The folding pin knife is marked I- XL George Wostenholm England. The other scalpels and tools are marked Brooks& Brooks Sheffield. Miller Bros Meriden, V Hun Boston, Winners Germany and the box is marked: EA Yarnall Surgical Instruments 115 S 10th Phil. The tools fit into the box neatly and the lid will close and latch. Old KOLBE scalpel knife from Civil War era Army Surgeon's Medical Surgical set
Old Surgical Scalpel knife- in"as found" uncleaned condition. NEAT old Surgeon's SCALPEL knife- both the tang and the top of the handle are marked: KOLBE. I believe it is a piece from a Surgeon's set- and may date back to the Civil War. There is some rust/ staining on the blade- and there is an age crack in the bottom of the handle. The handle is tight- I believe it is made of(bovine) bone- it is checkered and shows a nice patina from age. Please study the pictures- they are the most important part of the description!
