An impressive 4Gal. Crock with bold Floral or Foliate Decoration in Slip-Trailed Cobalt. The maker's mark is cobalt-washed and clearly impressed. It reads: J. S. TAFT& COMPANY. KEENE, N.H. This is a fairly scarce stamp and dates this piece to between 1871-1874, when James Taft and his uncle(James Burnap) ran the pottery; a very short production period. The Crock is in excellent overall condition. There is a t-shaped line on the glaze surface in back, and some discoloration consistent with age and use. The interior Albany Slip is absolutely flawless! No chips, cracks or repaired damage. Please see photos for details and further description. A very nice 4Gal. New Hampshire Crock. There are some age related discoloration issues. But they are under the clear outer coating; shellac or whatever they used back then as a clear coat. This is an original collectible piece that was handed down from my great grandmother from Battle Creek. Michigan.
