Serial#691. With original tanned leather case. Made between the 1930's-1950's. This instrument was purchased from Eldridge Geophysical Sales in Vancouver, B.C. mid 20th century, as it has the distibutors sales sticker on the back still. We purchased this from an avid antiques collectors estate. The dipping needle has an engraving on the back of the bakelite case stating"Canex Aerial Exp. Ltd. We believe this Instrument was only used moderately. There is only a couple minor surface scratches on the bakelite housing. Other than that no major damage to declare. They have some crazing on the inside along the bottom(see pictures) and the small bowl has a chip on the bottom edge. But looks like it was done at the factory and stained over since it matches the rest of the bowl. It was hand painted with opposing images of stylized flowers. The interior and bottom of the cup was decorated in a blue and white Sometsuke. The rim of the cup is scalloped. The soba choko was and still is a very popular cup used for noodle dipping in Japan. Typically used with cold buckwheat noodles. Unusual Oriental Hand Painted Bird Open Salt Cellar or Dipping Dish- Gold Rim Description This is a very unusual oriental dish. It has a blue hand painted design that is outlined in black. It looks like a flying bird. The exterior of the bowl has three turquoise clouds. The foot is eight sided with a dip in the center. The bottom of the foot is unglazed. There is no mark on the bottom. There is a fine gold line painted at the rim of the dish. The glaze is crackled like the glaze on Satsuma wares. This dish comes from an Ohio estate and is in excellent condition. The bowl is 2 5/8” in diameter and 1” high. My guess is that this dish was commissioned around 1900 by a family that had some connection to these exotic birds. The dish is old and the hand painted design is very unique. It appears that it could be a bread dipping set with the ewer for oil or vinaigrette and the two trays for dipping. H. Bequet handpainted pottery was manufactured in Quaregnon. Belgium located along its eastern border from 1934 to 1985. This design is#323 and the markings on this set are"Made in Belgium, H. It was entirely hand painted featuring a scalloped rim and Moriage to the Cherry Blossom petals. Two panels display an old Cherry Blossom tree and two panels show a round window viewing flowers in the garden. The inside bottom of the cup features a blossoming Iris flower.
