A variety of sunshine recorders were invented. With the Campbell-Stokes Recorder quickly becoming the most popular. In fact many are still in use to this day. It looks to modern eyes like a prop from the set of the latest Harry Potter film. It is quite easy to imagine Albus Dumbledore fussing around the crystal ball at the center of the contraption. However. Its roots are very much of this world– albeit the Victorian one. It was invented in 1853 by the Scottish Gaelic scholar Iain Òg Ìle. Known in English as John Francis Campell. Perhaps ... moreunsurprisingly he was also the Secretary to the Lighthouse Commission at the time. It was adapted and improved in 1879 by Sir George Gabriel Stokes(pictured left) a Cambridge University based physicist and mathematician known for his work in fluid dynamics, mathematical physics and, importantly, optics. As president of the Royal Society and Commission he also investigated the causes of railway disasters during that period. Campbell’s idea was straightforward but brilliant. A glass sphere would be placed in to a wooden bowl. 19thC Signed ROYAL WORCESTER VASE Stokes Pogis Church A collector’s opportunity to own this important 19th Century Royal Worcester Indian style vase titled“Stokes Pogis Church” designed by James Hadley and painted and signed by J(James) Bradley in 1889. This large vase is made of Parian and measures approximately 15 ¾” high and approximately 8” wide. As shown in the pictures. The detailed workmanship is extraordinary. You will also note in the pictures that the vase is signed, titled, has the purple Royal Worcester markings as well as several impressed markings including the mold number. Gilded serpent handles with pierced cover and neck. There has been a repair made at the base of the finial as shown in the picture. There is some wear to the gold paint where the cover fits on the neck of the vase but normal for a piece of its’age. This one is very nice condition, there are some frontis pages with the scribbled name of the child who first owned the book, there are some minor stains here and there, the cloth spine and paperboard cover has soiling. The spine in the front of the book is unbroken but the very last couple pages have broken from the spine, appears to be no paper loss. The printing style is uncommon, set up so the text faces the illustrations so there are many blank pages throughout the book which is correct for a true first US edition, there is also no copyright page which is correct. Bannerman was displeased with her compensation from the first London editions and she refused permission to publish in the United States. Frederick A. Stokes of New York published it anyway without the copyright. The book measures 5 3/4" x 4 1/4" The book is complete with all 27 illustrations. The illustration pages are not numbered which is also correct for a first edition. MEASUREMENTS: Length: 7½” CONDITION: This pencil is unused and in very good condition as you can see in the scan but it is old so the eraser is hard and it has a tight crack under James C. Stokes. There is also some silver on and around Boron Motor Fuel that must have rubbed off a silver pencil. I did not try to clean it off because I didn’t want to do anything to harm the lettering. The color is a nice cream color and it is a little darker than the scan shows for some reason. Check the scans to see how nice this still is after all these years. This is clean and ready to use. Normal 0 false false false EN-US JA X-NONE This is a handwritten letter written and signed by deceased Civil War veteran WILLIS STOKES DORRIS. Dorris(1838-1911) was born in Greensboro. Alabama. During the Civil War he belonged to Company E, Waul's Legion. Before serving with Waul's Legion, Dorris served six months on Galveston Island in Colonel Timmon's Regiment. He fought at Fort Pemberton and from there he went to Vicksburg. He was wounded three times in the Vicksburg Campaign. Dorris was taken prisoner on July 4, 1865 and was paroled on July 9th. He was exchanged as a prisoner and moved to Texas. In Texas he never married. He moved to the Confederate Men's Home in Austin where he died in 1911.
