Used Rim-on-a-stick, emboucher visualizer, Bach Corp 1 1/2 C trumpet mouthpiece
I first learned about a"rim-on-a-stick" from the 1962 book by Philip Farkas. The Art of Brass Playing. This one I made myself from a standard Vincent Bach Corp(no period) 1 1/2 C trumpet mouthpiece. It has the usual 1.073 OD and a.644 ID(16.36mm) and is soldered onto a 5" X 1/8"diameter brass rod via a small hole in the side at a slight angle. The underpart is included in this auction to validate its authenticity as a Bach rim. I don't know if there is enough metal left on the underpart to use it as a threaded stem, so I make no such claim, and am not listing it separately for that reason. I do know that I got it in the fall of 1963 when I began studies with a real teacher. He also sold me a West Burbank Benge for $300 plus an extra $30 to have it silver plated. Smile. Can you believe it? That was a lot of money back ... morethen. The Benge mouthpiece receiver is deeper than that of a Bach, so the wear on the shank of this piece is accordingly longer and would show if it could be salvaged and used on a Bach instrument. It wasn't until 1964 that I got the book and asked my teacher about it. His rather abrupt, Forget the book; let me guide you.surprised me. I naively figured it was just professional jealousy, but I did shelve the book. After high school I quit taking lessons, and after college I quit playing for 15 years until I again had the time and interest. It didn't go too well. In frustration I reached for the book. When it got even worse I picked up the phone. My old teacher took me on again, but suggested a larger mouthpiece. By then I had access to a good lathe and my old main piece was available, so on the sly, with out telling him, I did what I did. That was in the mid 1980's. A couple years later, after a bout of Bell's Palsy, it all went back into the closet not to come out again until retirement.
