The Soul Bender is based on the U.K. Sola Sound ToneBenders made famous in the late‘60s by Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page. The Fulltone adaptation of the circuit uses three matched germanium transistors. And has had the range of the tone control adjusted so that fully clockwise, the sound is bright and smooth, but not shrill. The pedal features true-bypass switching, and controls for Volume, Tone, and Dirt. Like all germanium-based pedals, the Soul Bender responds rather dramatically to the volume control on the guitar and the player’s touch. This pedal is in excellent condition. With minimal wear to the paint(a few small chips) and no visible wear to the screen-printing. The pedal has never seen Velcro, and the hand signed, dated, and serialized label on the bottom is pristine. A few years ago, Fulltone stopped production of the Soul Bender, as ... moresuitable transistors became unavailable. Fulltone reissued the pedal in late 2011, with newly sourced transistors, and a new, smaller housing. This is an original Soul Bender dating from 2005, before the production ceased, and features the larger enclosure(darn near bullet-proof) and the originally sourced and matched germanium transistors that some tone aficionados claim have a smoother breakup. While we’re not inclined to enter the fray of the tone cognoscenti, this is a cool piece of guitar pedal history, and the larger enclosure just looks and feels great. These fresh faced brightly coloured wonders are based upon the original pedals Dick handmade for Colorsound in the 1990's and have been put together with the help of his actual hand drawn circuit diagrams dating from the 1960's. Coolness and then some. Non-harsh-oscillating-processing. For a relatively high gain silicon fuzz circuit this thing is smooth. Like real smooth, a soft smooth you could say. Make no mistake this blue cyclops ... morewill fart-out a chewy smoke laden fuzz cloud you can really get your teeth into but will do so with a degree of etiquette. Bourbon as mouthwash holes punched through corrugated cardboard kinda tones but delivered to your ears with an air of refinement. No mad spazzed out oscillation and no frying eggs soundtracks going on in the background. In other words, it's a smartly designed circuit. Very simple, but thoroughly thought out. As cliched as it will sound it is a very germanium sounding silicon pedal. Not that silicon can't or doesn't sound warm or smooth but, to me at any rate, this degree of refinement adds much greatness to the whole idea of having a circuit so simple in design and function that sounds so well balanced. It'll easily trip on freaked out garage riffage all day long but happily chow down on the heavier 70's vibes. One knob, many flavours. The Fuzz Box's refinement also makes this a very interactive tool. I tested this meter on the bench(on 2 meters) it worked fine.One nice thing with this unit is that the actual meter is quite large& for easy viewing. The meter will read both forward or reverse power. Depending on which way you have the slug turned.One thing I noticed is the meter is"dampered" meaning when you apply power, that there is a slight delay in the"rise" time of the meter. The power level& frequency range is determined by which"slug" you are using.This unit does come with a SD 100W 100-250MHZ slug.I also tested this meter with a"BIRD" slug that I have& it worked fine with that.
