Fife by maker Penzel Mueller Crosby Model with George Cloos markings
Up for bid is a two piece fife made by Penzel Mueller between 1946-1952. It is a Crosby style fife with George Cloos markings. It is ebony wood and measure 15 1/4 inches long. It is in the key of C. As mentioned it is a two piece fife and the connective metal insert piece is made of brass. The metal ferrels are chrome plated and measure 1 5/8 inches long. The mouthpiece section is marked with"Geo. Cloos" and his interlocking"GC" logo. The barrel is marked"Crosby Model Key of C" and again"Geo. Cloos" and his interlocking"GC" logo. The identifying maker mark is opposite those barell markings on the back"Penzel Mueller New York" The Penzel Mueller company bought the Cloos company of Brooklyn, New York in 1946 and made fifes in the George Cloos/Crosby style until they went out of business ... morein 1952, so the date of manufacture in within that time frame. This fife came from the collection housed in a Museum in Westbrook, CT. Original Geo George Cloos 16 Inch Fife, Pre 1900
I don't know much about this fife except what I could read about online. It is 16" long and is nickel-plated plain tube with hard rubber embouchure. It is stamped GEO CLOOS in a bit of an arch shape. And nothing else. My guess that it predates 1900 is because I read that the mark changed after that time to something else. Please email with your questions. Thanks! Smoke free home.

This listing is for an antique George Cloos. Crosby Model Fife. This is a 17” rosewood fife with German silver ends. It is hard to date accurately, Cloos made fifes at least back to the 1860’s and into the 1900’s. I can’t tell you about its sound as I have no clue as to how to play it. This fife is in nice condition with a small scratch or nick here or there from normal use, but no cracks or major damage. This has no been cleaned. It is marked on the side Crosby and has a logo marking. A music holder was with this fife when I got it and it is being included with it. The holder appears to be made of brass. George Cloos Antique piccolo with ivory head joint
This wooden piccolo belonged to my father. Who retired from being a band director in the early 1970s. I believe it is over 100- 120 yrs. old, maybe older. It has the name Geo. Cloos on it. The head joint is ivory, there is a large crack which shows in one picture, but it seems to be tight and not leaking air. I believe all the keys are intact. I can get a sound when I blow it and the keys change the pitch. I am not a flute player) Pads are of course bad. There is a no. at the very bottom above the metal end- 8782. There is an Eflat symbol just below the headjoint on the wooden section. The wooden section is whole, no cracks. I think it could be played if someone wanted to put some work into it. Rare Vintage George Cloos/ Crosby Fife From The Early 20th Century in Excellent Condition. Ebony Wood George Cloos arrived in New York. At age 17, in 1851. According to the ship's manifest, his training was as a"joiner, a talent used in the building of wooden houses. Since the majority of new housing at the time was built of brick, Cloos had to find another way to make his living. He somehow made the jump from precision carpentry to musical instrument manufacturing. The George Cloos Company produced primarily piccolos, flutes and clarinets, and later fifes, in a shop in Brooklyn, NY from 1862 until 1946. Since part of this period covers the latter part of the Civil War, it is barely possible that he made some fifes that were used during that conflict. George Cloos, Brooklyn, NY, beautifully hallmarked and in fantastic condition. George Cloos is a famous US maker. Who came to the USA from Germany in 1862. Many of his flutes are simple system mutli keyed flutes however, this is a nice very simple one-key fife in the key of B flat. This style woodwind flute would have been used in a drum and fife marching Corps. And given the time period it most likely was used in the Cival War(1860's) It is a fantastic instrument. Without cracks or defects. It arrived in excellent condition, ... morerequiring almost nothing than a few minor adjustments. The finish and few"scars" in the wood are as what George Cloos had in mind when making this marching Fife. No fine french high polish finishing; this was to be taking into the battle field as a marching flute. not used to perform on stage. It has the rough grains in the wood. And a few scars(niks as shown) obtained over the past hundred years or so. It is amazing that this little fife is in such amazing condition given its purpose, how when and where it was used. We wonder just how long it was used in the war, and what the player did with the fife afterwards(probably threw it in a box and stored away in the attic) It has a strong bright tone and speaks easily in the high register. That is exactly how it is intended to play. Almost a piccolo; the fife must play in bright high pitch. Antique Rosewood Fife Bb B-Flat Wooden Flute by George Cloos
According to beafifer.com this is probably a. Walter Crosby model fife by George and Frederick Cloos made in Brooklyn c. 1870. Has the hard to read mark Crosby and the maker's mark GC. This flute is 17 inches long. Rosewood body with long. Conical, seamless brass ferrules that bear the characteristic Cloos knurling. There is a small inconsequential chip on the end. Inside the ferrule, see the last photo. This flute belonged to Los Angeles jazz great Bud Shank. I have no way to prove the Bud Shank provenance. I bought several flutes from his estate liquidator about a year after his passing and this is one of them.

Up for auction is an early antique post Civil War Era wood fife made by George Cloos of Brooklyn. New York. This instrument is being offered in AS-IS used vintage condition. No returns. ~ I am not an expert on antique fifes. I know this gem needs to be restored with tender loving care ~ Rare and hard-to-find. This 19th C entury American six-hole wooden fife features a two-piece construction with a threaded tuning joint. The metal ferrules on the ends are short and attached by"d im pling" with a punch in two spots on each. They seem to be nickel o r German silver. The wood is a dark hardwood. Rosewood? The head joint and the body are both hallmarked GEO. CLOOS with the superimposed cypher along with the model number 8(the name Crosby does not appear. I believe this is an earlier Cloos example. Circa mid-to-late 1860’s? Unusual in ... moresize, the length is approximately 13" this seems shorter than other fifes. I am not sure what key it is pitched in. H owever the low note is approximate ly a concert D and the distance between the b low hole center and center of the last finger hole is approximately 8 3/4" This small antique fife is in AS-IS used vintage condition with surface marks and wear commensurate with use and age. The head joint has been thickly wrapped with black tape by a previous player to effect a better embouchure plate. There is some wear to the threading at the tuning joint and the ferrules show oxidation. There are light surface marks and wear to the finish. Some tape residue and tiny speckles of white paint along with a small scuff of blue paint. This 19th C entury marching band instrument has been“around the block” and shows signs of wear but the wooden body seems seems intact with no visible cracks(please see all photos) This antique fife is being offered in AS-IS used vintage condition. Vintage Late 1800's George Cloos Solid Wood Piccolo W/ Orig. Case. Db LP U.S.
Vintage Late 1800's George Cloos Db Low Pitch Solid Wood Piccolo with Original Case. The Piccolo is in really good shape for it's age. It will need a good servicing inc. pads. Oiling, adjustments, etc. There is a hair line crack on the mouthpiece section that has either been repaired or is just a surface crack, for there is no leaks. The keys are sticky, yet I was able to play some simple scales with it, and it sounds good. Not sure if the end pieces are silver or not, but they sure look like it. This is 100% original including the case that is in great shape and fully functional. This is double signed and complete. Go online and see what some of Cloos's wood flutes and piccolos sell for and you will see my price is great. PRICE REDUCED FOR THE WATCHERS OUT THERE.

Vintage George Cloos Cocus wood flute - fully restored
This fully restored George Cloos flute is a beauty. It is cocus wood with a nice shellac finish and dates from around 1900. Cloos was known to have imported some flutes and sold them. But this flute is much higher quality than what you usually see. The embouchure hole is small and square, which gives this flute a nice focused sound. It plays very well in tune in my opinion- better than most simple system keyed flutes out there that I have touched. Nice projection, and meaty lower octave. It plays easily up through A' I recently played a Kuhlau duet in a concert on this flute. I have acquired a new keyed flute, so this one must go. No cracks in the instrument other than the sealed on in the barrel. Headjoint is metal lined. New head cork, new pads, new tenon wrappings. The b touch was broken off some time ago. We ground down the rough ... moreedge to it so it wouldn't catch on anything in preparation to fabricate another touch for it, but I have never had any use for the low b key. We can fabricate a touch for it for a fee if you would like. Plays at 440 with the head out about a 1/4 of an inch. Pitch range is 430- 445. Comes in the original case, which has seen it's better days, but is still functional with a rubber band around it. Asking $550 because of the missing touch and metal ring. These flutes that play this well from Cloos usually go for $650 restored. This flute comes from a non-smoking home. I accept returns within 14 days of receipt. Please see below… I’m no expert in fifes but I’ve had a number of them just because I think they are interesting…wish I could play one. 16 15/16” overall length with 2” long german silver bands at each end; ¾” diameter with very little taper. The reinforcing bands appear to be original to the instrument and are something I’ve never seen on a fife before. You must look very closely to see the letters“EO.CLO S” impressed into the wood which I take to be the remnants of a“GEO.CLOOS” makers mark. I can find no other markings. In original. Untouched finish; no splits or cracks. This item has been re-listed because apparently it violated an e-bay mortal sin. I'm not sure how that can be when the only other Cloos fifes on eBay were listed in the same category(Civil War) A fair warning to those ... morelisting Cloos fifes in any Civil War category. Apparently an eBay secret agent. Between bouts of self pleasure, looks for listings that he or she does not approve of. Unfortunately they do not have the fortitude to provide input directly to sellers that offend them but rather whines to eBay from behind their cloak of invisibility. Cloos fife made of blackwood in near mint condition
Up for bid is a blackwood six hole fife made by George Cloos. It has chrome ferells that measure 2 inches long and the fife measures 17 inches in overall length. Plays in the key of B flat. The ferells have a very fine and intricate knurling pattern. The wooden body shows no blemishes or imperfections. It bears the makers mark"Geo Closs Crosby" George Cloos made fifes in Brooklyn New York from the early 1900's to 1947. This fife was made in the Crosby style. Under whom Cloos was an apprentice before the turn of the century and from who he learned his craft.

Up for bid is a Cloos six hole fife made of rosewood. It measures 17 inches in length and has chrome ferells that measure 2 inches apiece. It bears the makers mark of"Geo Cloos Crosby" on the wooden body. The chrome ferells have fine intricate knurling to them and have very minor score marks. The wooden rosewood body has no dings or imperfections. Cloos made fifes out of Brooklyn New York from the early 1900s to 1947 and this fife is the style of a Crosby model. Under whom Closs apprenticed and learned his trade prior to the turn of the century. It plays in the key of B flat.

Vintage George Cloos Crosby Model Fife 17" Rosewood?
This piece appears to be in beautiful shape with only a few minor surface scratches. I know nothing about fifes. Only info I have to offer is that its marked GEO CLOOS over CROSBY with C over G in center. The piece has been photographed as found. I don't know the proper way to clean it or if it can be played. The George Cloos Company produced fifes from 1862 to 1946. The ferrules are rounded with no dents. This fife is 17" long. Please feel free to message any questions. Thanks.

Fife measures approx. 15 1/2" and has six finger holes. Not sure of the key. Wood is probably rosewood, possibly ebony.not sure. Exact age unknown. Pics show condition accurately. Supurb George Cloos Vintage Wood Flute 8-keys, Fully Overhauled
This grenadilla flute by George Cloos is in immaculate condition with no cracks at all. The bore looks smoothed and polished. Like this flute has been hardly played. 8 nickle-silver keys with a French style C# and C touch at the foot. Embouchure hole is still crisp. Minor repairs to the long f and c keys- please see pictures. This flute has an excellent carrying sound that would make it perfect for Irish or folk music. The low register can really take a lot of air. The flute is well in tune with itself. It plays at 440 with the head all the way in with great intonation. Pitch range is 430- 440. Headjoint is metal lined. All new pads and tenon wrappings. Comes with its original case with purple velvet, which is also in amazingly good shape. I haven't encountered a George Cloos flute that wasn't a good player and you won't be disappointed ... morewith this flute. Headjoint marked Geo. Cloos/ LP. Barrel and middle joint marked with 9785 serial number. Body also marked with the music store who sold it: York& Sons/ Grand Rapids. Michigan. Embouchure measures 11.86mm x 10mm. FIFE - George Cloos - 1862-1930's - Unique design/Pristine condition
Vintage GEORGE CLOOS FIFE. In perfect condition! A prized instrument for any collector or fifer, alike! George Cloos arrived in NY. In 1862. He made clarinets and other woodwind instruments during the Civil War, and began making fifes shortly afterward. Many of the instruments were marked with a"Crosby" name, from the influence of a W.A. Crosby/Boston. The characteristics of the Cloos Crosby model fifes included a mark of the Crosby name in a semi-circle- over a capital G. With a superimposed C; enclosed with the marks, which indicate a Crosby model fife, made by Cloos. This beautiful instrument is unique in that it is marked with the" Geo.Cloos" label- only. The G and the C are superimposed. As well, however, this particular instrument has the number"21" beneath the labeling! Additionally, the typical Cloos ... moreCrosby instrument has extended ferrules. The ferrules on this fife are only 1/2" long, on both ends; with the center ring at 1/4" which, is not typical of the Cloos Crosby fifes. All labeling is easy to identify, and we estimate the date of manufacture as an early Cloos model of the first part of the century. Again, this is truly a unique example of the Cloos fife! The wood appears to be cocuswood. There are no cracks. Chips or obvious blemishes. There are a few extremely mild, barely noticeable dents on the body. The red string on the body, connecting the head joint is true and intact. The connection is tight. There are small dents on the bottom ferrule, which is seamless, as is the top ferrule. Playing in the Key of C. The sound quality is mellow in the low tones, and sweet in the high. Smardo Militaria and Collectibles Pictured is an original civil war era to late 1800's Rosewood fife. From what I've read I believe it's from the 1870's to 1880s. Came with several other fifes that belonged to a Civil War veteran and Union Army musician. Later. He became a member of the GAR(Grand Army of the Republic) and played the fife for them. Appears to be rose wood. No markings that I could fine, but they could be under the center bands, I believe this was made by George Cloos.No cracks or chips. slight dent on metal mouth piece(will not effect use) Overall length is 15 1/2" This fife is in excellent condition and will make a great addition to a collection or for play. Acquired at a Skinner auction recently with other Civil War items from the collection of Peter Frazier and Prudence Fleck, who began their extensive collection of CW artifacts in the 1950's. The fife is in overall good shape and works, meaning a non fife player can make some sounds with it. 17" long. Here is some info on Crosby culled from the web: Walter A. Crosby lived and worked in Boston from 1828 through 1872. To my knowledge. There are few of his fifes in existence; four? are in the Library of Congress. I know of three or four others and will have photos as soon as possible. The conical ferrules were made from a single sheet of metal, ... moreformed to a tapered cylinder, and soldered along a seam that ran the length of the ferrule. They are marked, W. Crosby- Boston" or W.A.Crosby- Boston. He used no other marking. One unique characteristic of at least the early Crosby fifes is in the way the bore was cut. Apparently, the tooling available was of insufficient length to cut the bore in one pass. It would be cut from one end, the fife would be reversed on the lathe, and it would be cut again in the opposite direction. Exact alignment was virtually impossible, so, in some, if not all, a visible step can be observed near midpoint when the internal bore surface is examined. Below is a Walter Crosby fife with tapered ferrules using a solder joint. It is often said that Crosby made many instruments that were used during the Civil War. However. This is a nice old Civil War era Rosewood fife that has the maker's mark that says"Geo. Cloos. Crosbv" This was a popular fife used by the soldiers in the regimental band. The fife originated in medieval Europe and is often used in military and marching bands. The fife is a simple instrument usually consisting of a tube with 6 finger holes. And diatonically tuned. Some have 10 or 11 holes for added chromatics. The fife also has an embouchure hole. Across which the player blows, and a cork or plug inside the tube just above the embouchure hole. Fine antique George Cloos Crosby fife
This is a really fine example of a very late C19th or early C20th American'military' fife. Its almost impossible to date these accurately. Though the pattern of the stamp implies its an'early' one from the shop that produced these for the American Civil War Veteran and re-enactor groups that sprung up in the late C19th and into the 20th and is still going strong today. Its at least a century old. The George Cloos'Crosby' fifes are generally regarded as the best sounding. Most playable antique fifes available, though actually playing them properly requires skill and effort. This example includes the refinement of differently sized finger holes- this innovation happened well after the Civil War despite many sellers trying to hand these off as of that age. I do not know the key these are in-Markings: Geo CLOOS over Capital G with superimposed C enclosed by these marks under"Crosby" Condition- no cracks in main body. But I see small cracks that are in the edges under the metal ferrules. Some minor dings and wear at each end. 1 of the 17 inch fifes is missing the metal ferrules at each end. Antique Geo Cloos rosewood piccolo
Up for auction is a very nice antique Geo Cloos rosewood piccolo.The instrument iss in very good condition with no cracks or breaks but has some wear to the plating here and there.It is marked with the numbers 10509 and it measures about 15" long.

Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE For sale is a wooden fife made by George Cloos at some point during the first decade of the twentieth century. It is 17" long. And made of rosewood with nickel silver ferrules. The ferrules show a little wear to the finish. But still have plenty of shine. There are a couple small imperfections, but no noticeable dents.Close-up photos of ferrules are of the worst parts of finish. The rosewood is in great shape. There are no visible cracks. Nor does it sound like there are any hidden ones when tapped. With absolutely no cleaning on my part, the wood is shiny and mostly blemish free. A few very minor scratches, but nothing you can see without really looking for them. The holes are very crisp, with no signs of wear. The bore may have a fine coating of dust, but is otherwise very clean. Fife ... morehas an irregular 6-hole pattern. The hole pattern is o-O-O-o-O-o. With irregular spacing between holes. I am close to certain that it is to be played in the key of B flat, but won't guarantee that information is correct. Date is estimated by a number of features- trademark stamp. Ferrule markings and length, as well as comparison to others. Trademark stamp reads GEO CLOOS in an arch over the intertwined GC insignia, with CROSBY written beneath, in a straight line. Display it. Or play it, this is a very nice instrument.
