TRIAD HS-54 Plate to Line Transformer Here we have a used and fully tested HS-54 output/matching transformer this has a split primary that can be wired series for 20K ohms or parallel for 5K ohms and the secondary has two tapped windings that can in various combinations give you 600 or 250 ohms with a balanced center tap. or 300 or 62.5 ohms with no center tap. This would normally be used as a plate to line out transformer however HS-54 is a little limited power-wise at 10dBm. however there are two alternate uses. 1) as a plate to network transformer in a pre-amp with EQ/filter network application i.e. from a tube mic pre to a passive 600 ohm network followed by makeup gain 2) as a magical mic input to preamplifier transformer. on turning this transformer around- transformers are non-directional. you can feed into the"secondary" ... moreand step UP to the higher impedance"primary" so here we have some interesting applications. 2a) older passive ribbon mics"like" low input impedances and this transformer is heavily shielded with Triad's P-5 shielding spec. three nickel alloy shields interleaved with two heavy coppershading rings to give 95 dB reduction in pickup" you certainly have a well shielded transformer for bringing in low level signals to be amplified. Using the 62.5 ohm configuration as an input matches well to many older nominal 50 ohm sources. you also have 150. 250 and 600 ohms. all good for ribbons and dynamic mics. 2b) also good for moving coil phono cartridges which can like anything from 50 to 150 ohms as a load and need the clean step up you get from a well-shielded transformer the two 10K ohm windings can be wired in parallel to yield 5K which would provide a goodly amount of"free" transformer gain and work with discrete transistor amplifiers. or with them wired in series you can run into the grid of a vacuum tube and you are off to a good start. so. this is not an HS-50. which is what Pultec used for outputs. but this is a good part depending on how it'
