Megger 500 Volt Insulation tester Circa 1940 A vintage test meter made by Evershed& Vignoles ltd. In good condition with purpose made leather carrying case(from the crown markings this was possibly a GPO Post office issue) The Bakelite case is in good condition with just minor scuffs and marks and someone in its past has inscribed polarity marks on the front. I know very little about how this worked but the crank handle turns and seems to work fine. The meter needle is free moving when the megger is turned upside down etc. I believe these were used to test the insulation of electrical cables. The Western Electric case is made to house the Weston voltmeter. The interior of the casing is lined with wool cloth. Similar to the bottom of the candlestick phones from the same era. There's a little support bar that unscrews to allow the meter to me installed. The original leads and leather strap and buckle are included with the meter. It belonged to an AVID COLLECTOR of UNUSUAL OBJECTS who lived in NEW ORLEANS. It survived KATRINA& made it's way to PENSICOLA, FLORIDA. From there, it landed in a huge warehouse in HISTORIC ST. ANDREWS where I spotted it with other aviation related stuff. As an interior designer, it IMMEDIATELY CAPTIVATED me. When asking the warehouse owner about it, she told me that the man has passed away but told her it was used in WORLD WAR II to test PILOTS EYES. In doing some research, it may be a slit machine or something to do with horizon testing. No doubt in my mind, this piece is so UNIQUE!
