This is a very unusual. Antique planimeter. Planimeters are used to measure the area of a closed region, for example, the area under a plotted curve. Thus, they are useful in surveying, for example. However, this Lippincott planimeter was made by the James L. Robertson& Sons company. In New York, in or after 1896(the patent date) to be used with a steam engine indicator to evaluate the engine's performance. Steam engine indicators draw a curve that shows how the engine is operating. Plotting displacement vs. cylinder pressure. Measuring the area of the curve allows calculation of the horsepower produced by the engine. Later planimeter designs register the measurement on a calibrated circular dial. Often with another geared wheel that counts revolutions of the first. However, this instrument uses a different principle, indicating the ... morearea on a linear paper scale, enclosed in a sealed glass tube. Each tube has two scales, and this instrument comes with two of the tubes. The case has space for a third tube, but I don't know whether the set normally came with two or three of the scale tubes. The black wheel rides along the glass tube as you trace the curve you are measuring, and you read off the result on the scale against the wheel's edge. Instrument is in excellent condition. All metal surfaces are shiny. Though there are some small signs of wear. All moving parts operate well and properly. The two glass scales are in excellent condition, clean and unmarred, though the paper inside is slightly yellowed. The thin leather that covered the box is in poor condition, and is missing in many places. The box itself, hinges, and clasp are all in good condition.

I have nine of the 250mm PE2485/01 scales and one 960mm scale for a Philips DRO(digital readout) Please look close at the scales. Four of the 250mm scales had damage that may cause a reading error but I think the only one that will cause errors is the one 250mm scale with 45mm damaged out on the end. Take a look at the pictures, if you have any questions email me and we will do what you need. The one long scale(960mm) has a crack close to the one end but we ran it without errors. Remember the reader heads are about 3" long so 3" of each scale is unusable. Some of the scales have distorted frames but if the glass scale is not broken it will still work.
