I was told by the flea market seller I bought this from that it is from the Bendix Corp. Probably need to be a highly skilled electronic technician to get this back to doing whatever it does. Those of you that are considering building your own mock-up science fiction lab complete with vaporing beakers and walls of flashing lights with dials, switches and meters might find this piece useful. It was operational the last time I turned it on, although I cannot absolutely guarantee that it will work when a new battery is installed. the handle has a crack on the hinge that is taped over and functions well. I also have included various straight and angle beam ultrasonic transducers, and some eddy current probes. Also, I have a block similar to an IIW Calibration Block, and various calibration blocks and step wedges. There is also an inch system guage block set which I've never used and is still wrapped in the paper that it came in. They were bought at an estate sale of a television and radio repairman(I surmise this from old business receipts and other related items dating from the 1960s and early 70s) These devices appear to be the first and second to be manufactured by Transistor Devices Inc. Serial number 1 on one and serial number 2 on the other tester. This would date both units circa early-mid 1960*DATE 061664* shows on front of one of the testers. I assume this means June 16 1964. Antique Textile Testing Equipment,John Nesbitt Manchester Yarn Twist tester
This is a lovely rare antique piece of English Textile Manufacturing history. Whilst a practical piece of equipment. It is also(in my eyes) attractive to look at and an interesting talking point. This John Nesbitt instrument was used to measure the number of twists put into a yarn during the manufacturing process. The amount of twist in a yarn is critical for the resulting yarn strength. Stability and caliper, but also for manufacturing profitability. The greater the twist the lower the production rate. So this was an important Laboratory test for textile manufacturing. The yarn to be tested is held by the two clamps and untwisted by rotating the handle on the wheel. Until all the twist is removed. The number of twists removed is recorded on the rotating dial. The yarns can be untwisted in either direction, to deal with"S" or"Z" ... moretwisted yarns. All the parts of this instrument work correctly. Length 49cm. Width 16cm, Height 12cm Weight 1.6kg I have listed the date as 1901-1950. And I think this will be correct, but I have not been able to confirm the actual date. There are some numbers stamped on the base of the wooden plinth which may give an expert some clues. You are welcome to view the item before bidding if you wish- message me to make arrangements. It is also an option to collect in person and pay with cash or paypal if preferred. Footnote: You may have seen listed on ebay a similar Yarn test twister made by the same manufacturer. I'm not sure which way round, whether this is the modified version or the other, i suspect this is the modified one) whereas this one has a direct drive from the turning wheel the other one had a geared wheel, I guess someone would know, the principle of operation is still the same.
