Dial indicator mounting rods and accessories used for shaft alignment measurements are subject to the affects of gravity and deflection which cause inaccurate measurements for shimming requirements. The amount of sag varies with the length and stiffness of the dial indicator assembly and is different for every alignment project. Sag should be compensated for on every job in order to achieve good alignment. When measuring Sag with a pipe or mandrel. It is not always possible to mimic the actual setup conditions such as measuring from the shaft of a motor to the outside edge of a coupling. Once the sag has been determined, the dial indicator setup must be taken off the pipe and setup again on the equipment. This is a time consuming process.
