USA Sales ONLY. No international shipping. Your bids are for Rare and Uncommon Medical Instrument from the 1920s or 30s. This is a portable Trocar/Cannula Pen. It is constructed of solid fine silver with description as follows: FIG 1) This tool is approximately 5 1/2 inches long and 3/8 inch in diameter. It unscrews like an old fountain pen. The case is engine turned with a small cross hatch pattern and is constructed of solid fine silver with the exception of the smallest trocar pin and the lance tips. There is a monogram shield on the outer case that has not yet been engraved. There are no hallmarks or other markings on the instrument. But it has been acid tested as silver and is constructed in the highest quality. I don't know if it is.925 or less? FIG 2) The pen unscrews into two separate hollow halves. Both ends of the tube have ... morea round opening to allow air to pass through. INside are 4 separate trocar lance needles with a threaded top and knurled grip. The sizes are graduated as shown in(FIG 3. 4& 5) Each lance slides inside its own silver cannula tube. This in in a teloscoping fashion with each fitting into the next. All then fit inside the Pen/Case(the cannula tube is missing for the next to smallest lance) All components are solid silver with the exception of the smallest lance and the three sided lance tips. Each of the trocar lances screw individually into the longest half of the outer pen/case as in(FIG 5) Also if you study the end of the lance in(FIG 6)this photo. You can see that portion of the lance that is not solid silver and where it connects to the lance. This is a very nice piece that would make a desired addition to any vintage medical instrument collection. The condition is great without dents or dings. I am sure you would not be disappointed. Antique French surgical drainage trocar made by Charriere of Paris. Dates to fourth quarter of 19th century. Was used for external drainage of body cavities. Such as ascites(paracentesis) pleural effusions(thoracentesis) empyema, hydrocoele, seroma, hematoma, and abscesses. Could also be used for suprapubic drainage of the urinary bladder. Separates into two pieces, so the outer cannula could be kept in place to drain for minutes, hours, or days if desired. Note the groove on the hub of the outer cannula, in which a suture could be tied to stabilize the cannula to the skin, if it was desired to have it remain for awhile, thus preventing accidental dislodgement. Because of this, the cannula was made of silver, which is less reactive and will not corrode when in prolonged contact with body fluids. Though normal silver tarnishing has occurred ... morehere as expected, it could be shined with a silver polishing cloth if the owner so desired. This instrument used for draining abcesses and pockets of suppuration. Also trachiotomy and nasal cavaties to relieve pressure. Build up of fluids(odema or gasses) bloat. Very good condition, sharp point. Nice original high polished steel shank and point. Case has no chips but some old hairline cracking in wood trocar cover. Antique Sterling Silver Cased Trocar & Cannula with Clasp End - London 1892
Up for Auction I have this very rare little surgical Trocar complete with original Cannula. As you can see. The piece comes cased with two silver caps to each end, both hallmarked 1892. I cannot be sure if the contents are sterling silver as well but I would suggest that the clasp end is but the needle/cannula end are steel. As well as the hallmarks, the case is also marked with'Down London' Down Brothers) and'Seamless Tube' to the opposite end. I cannot make out the makers mark I am sorry to say. As mentioned. The pocket instrument is double ended, the other end having a clasp like tool, I have searched high and low and cannot figure out what this part is for. The loop is still present to it and it works nicely, it also looks to be in silver also, featuring some pretty heavy patina. The other end is where the actual Trocar ... moresits which also houses the Cannula. Both are in sturdy condition. The diameter of the needle is approx 2mm with a length of 4.9cm. I have decided to leave the patina as it is which is present throughout. More so in some areas than others. The piece is in good. Sturdy condition though there are a few things I wish to point out which is also evident in the pictures below; there are a few scuffs and bumps to the casing including small dints, namely to the domed tip where you should also see a little scuff or mild crack of some sort, the silver is still very strong and thick.
