Early 20th century sigmoidoscope/proctoscope manufactured by Welch Allyn Co. of Auburn. NY. This bears the patent number 1,662,227, which was issued March 13, 1928. The patent papers describe this tool as a"sigmoidoscope or proctoscope to be used in the examination of the rectum, pelvic colon, sigmoid flexure, descending colon, and other canals, channels or ducts, for locating possible pathological troubles and permitting curative remedies to be applied to the affected parts" I'm not sure of the metal used to plate this instrument, but the inner tube inserts have a patina similar to what gathers on silver. A few light scratches here and there, and the exterior insulation of the cord has broken through just above the handpiece, but the insulation to the interior wires is in great shape and has no damage at this point.
