THE ROSARY: This pull chain WWII official- issue Catholic soldier's rosary has a hanging length of 16.75" Both the pull chain beads and center medal are typical of WWII battle rosaries; however. The crucifix is truly unique. Both arms of the crucifix are spring-loaded, allowing them to fold flat against the vertical pillar so it can be stored neatly inside the case. The condition of this rosary is EXCEPTIONAL. There is no damage or repairs(although there is a moderate amount of age-related darkening to the metal surfaces. The spring mechanism is in perfect working order. THE BAKELITE CASE: This bakelite case is approx. 3.25" tall and has a compass built into the screw-on watertight top. On the edge of the top. The Second Brigade moved forward most gallantly in double line of battle, across a plain swept by a destructive fire of the enemy. Colonel W. S. Clark, of the Twenty-first Massachusetts, says in his report: When about sixty rods from the city, Color-Sergeant Collins of Company A, was shot, and fell to the ground. Sergeant Thomas Plunkett of Company E, seized the colors and carried them proudly forward to the farthest point reached by our troops during the battle. When the regiment had commenced the delivery of its fire, about forty rods from the position of the rebel infantry, a shell was thrown with fatal accuracy at the flag. The use and function of this figure are not known. Among the Nyamwezi such figures were most likely used in connection with the cult of ancestors. It is known that before the invasion of Islam and Christianity traditional Nyamwezi worshiped the ancestors. Today a few groups of Nyamwezi become Muslim and some other Christians. The Nyamwezi are the largest ethnic group in central Tanzania where they share close ties with the neighboring Sukuma people. According to oral traditions they settled in west central Tanzania where they presently live sometime during the 1600s. Called âpeople of the moonâ by their neighbors in Tanzania The Nyamwezi lived in large settlements and later in a number of kingdoms but today live in small dispersed settlements. The Nyamwezi are known for their carving that is at best not embellished. Roughly executed and relatively sparsely described in the literature of East African art.
