A left edge tear has been mended inside and it has the usual left edge wear associated with dis-binding. CONDITION: I use a six-step condition scale to describe the overall paper quality: Mint. Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor. Good means just that: desireable for a collection with no immediate need to upgrade. Excellent and Mint are usually reserved for publisher and music store remainders. Expect Good-minus and Fair to have considerable wear. This indicates that McArthur’s designs will become hot property in Australia but exactly when is anyone’s guess. The two highest sales I’ve had since being in this business have been for Warren McArthur designs(neither of these items made it on-line) The chair on offer in this auction has a typical art deco shape which has been widely copied and even today the concept of this design is often seen in new furniture stores. The difference is that this chair is an original designed over 80 years ago- it was one of the first ever in this style- its investment appeal is obvious. I believe this chair was made in Australia in the 1940’s by Namco- the only company in the world(outside America) to be granted a license to produce Warren McArthur’s designs. On a world-wide stage this chair is rare and highly sought-after particularly by the Americans and Europeans. I could only find a handful in a similar design for sale worldwide at this time. This is a really nice carved French style armchair made by the Thomasville Furniture Co. It has a whitewash finish and I believe the upholstery is leather. It measures aprox. 27" wide x 22" deep x 37 1/2" high. The seat is 23 1/2" wide x 20" deep and it is 17 1/2" from the floor to the top of the seat. There are a couple of scuffs mostly on the back which you can see in the pictures, overall it is nice and clean. This chair was found in an old house in Lancaster. MA. There was a Shaker colony directly to the east of Lancaster in Harvard, MA, and another directly to the north of Lancaster in Shirley, MA. We cannot say that this is definitely a Shaker chair, but it does have a certain characteristics of the Shaker style, with its fairly plain stiles and stretchers. ... moreIt is most certainly made by hand. There is a certain uneven quality to its construction; the left hand facing rear stile is 45” in height while the right hand facing rear stile is 44 ½” in height; however, the vasiform turnings at the base of the legs are of uniform height. There are hand-made square nails used in its construction. This is a four(4) slat ladder back arm chair which retains an old stained surface. It has four back slats which are curved on top and flat on the bottom. Indicating a New England origin. The slats are made of oak; the rest of the chair is most probably ash or maple. The rush seat is in useable condition; there are several small areas of broken rush but the seat is still sturdy. It has shaped arms terminating in round pad hand rests which show plenty of wear. The stiles are topped with acorn and nipple finials which also display a great deal of wear. The plain turned double front stretchers also display wear. The legs terminate in vasiform turnings below the lower stretchers. The front stiles display the same vasiform turnings above the seat rail and below the hand rests. this is a very early chair. Im told by a reputable person that the wood is walnut, possibly elm arms, and a newer oak seat, its constuction is mortise and peg, these mortises have been made in a random way, as on 1 arm the mortise goes all the way up, and no sign of this on the other, the same goes for the legs, 1 hase fully through mortise, there has been worm to the back, and legs, the front feet have been repaired with oak blocks, i think te supports under the seat have also been replaced,very sound, hard to age this chair, though, surely minimum of 300 years id think

Description: This listing is for an 18th Century English Georgian Chippendale Carved Mahogany Wingback Arm Chair. C. 1760-80. It is a stunning and rare piece, with a unique and quite interesting design. The crest is flat, squaring off with small lobed wings that culminate where your head would rest, and flow back into the frame almost immediately. These flank a broad and very comfortable upholstered back, from which both open upholstered arms flare slightly outward before joining the sloped arm supports. Each arm support is intricately carved with gothic fretwork designs out of a single solid block of mahogany- none of the carvings on this chair are applied, all of them being carved of the solid. These flow into a square seat, ... moredeeply upholstered and stuffed over the rail. The seat rests over two square front legs, each with gothic fretwork motifs carved long them, stretched with a box stretcher joining using hidden tenon mortise joinery- not dovetails. The rear legs are square, canted and slightly backswept and all four legs are chamfered along the interior corner. This is one of the most beautiful Georgian chairs we've carried. Having fabulous carvings with a deep glowing patina on all exposed surfaces in rich mahogany. It is incredibly solid and heavy, being fully functional nearly three-hundred years after being originally crafted, with generations of strength still in the joints throughout. This is an outstanding find for any serious collector of Georgian antiques, but also a wonderful find for anyone looking to bring this classic design to their home in a striking and wonderful way. Late 18th Century Antique American Pad Footed Arm Chair

Description: This listing is an American Country Arm Chair with a Rush Seat and Pad Feet circa late 18th Century. Partially composed of 18th century and 19th century parts. A yoke form crest hangs carefully over a vasiform splat and turned stiles. It has a nearly mint condition rush seat with curved heavily patinated arms. Using pegged construction over the tenon mortise joinery, the arms secure into turned legs, both of which terminate in perfect flat padded feet. These are most stunning feet, carefully carved with a strong patina- note the legs are added to the piece and are not original. The front of the chair has a sharply turned stretcher, appearing to be later than the chair. This is a lovely very conversational ... morepiece. But due to the stability of it is only a functional chair for the most careful of homes. In light of it's composed nature, it is not an acquisition for the serious collector, but rather is perfect for the lover of antique furniture looking for that perfect piece to complete their decor. Measurements: 28" wide by 21" deep by 42 1/2" high. Seat sits 16" from the ground. Condition: Visually Good Condition- Slightly loose joints throughout. Pad feet are not original and were later added to the piece. Rear legs are shortened and have filled inserts on outer edges- note pictures below. Seat is almost certainly replaced. Left leg has a stabalized crack and large gouge above seat(visible in photos) Light use indicators in the form of scratches. Chips and dings. Sturdy and stable for practical regular use. Rare 18th Century Antique William Mary Jacobean English Arm Chair c. 1690-1720

Probably circa 1690-1720 Item# 110004YUE22 This is an incredible piece of art with an excellent sense of form throughout. The upholstered back is a square frame. Each piece joining with small pegs to create a simple firm structure. Excluding the replaced bottom slat of this frame, each inch of this frame is very well oxidized, being unfinished and therefore exposed to oxygen. Each arm tenons through the back of this frame with square joint. Visible from behind. Both arms are thick grained carved Elm, each flowing with a smooth cabriole form up and down and finally into the scrolled handles. An inverted V is carved loosely up and over the handle on either side. These two arms flank a comfortable upholstered seat. The turned arm supports ... morejoin the elm arm with small pegs bringing them together. The rear posts are square down through the seat frame. Where they are then turned with ring and cup formations. The front legs start in the arm supports, which are turned before squaring off for the seat frame; at that point, they continue the turned ring and cup design, but also have a medallion carved design at the front cross bar. An X stretcher locks each leg together, with a single turned crossbar between the front two legs. A turned finial crests the middle of the stretcher, tenoned through the cross with a dowel. Each foot is square, then terminating on replaced oak blocks. The quality in the turnings is simply fantastic. Each is crisp and executed flawlessly. While slight variations are notable. Since each is the turned by hand as the carpenter relies primarily on his experience and"feel" for the turnings, it is noteworthy just how well these complex formations were cut. Each of the turnings was ebonized, and the original paint is still visible throughout. This chair is a precious part of history. Antique George III English Chippendale Arm Chair, c1760
Description: This listing is for a Period English George III Chippendale Walnut Arm Chair with a Vase-form splat. Probably circa 1760. Perhaps the most romantic part of the chair is the sheer intensity of patina throughout the chair. It is simply gorgeous, the entire chair maintaining what appears to be original finish with later layers of wax applied. Most of the repairs are very early and have fully oxidized to become part of the finish. The arms are masterfully turned. It has a light green leather upholstered seat, which appears to be a mid 20th century replacement. Turning the chair upside down, you can see a nearly black level of oxidization. Both front legs have light fluting along the outer corners, finishing the lines. The chair uses peg construction throughout, bringing the entire frame and structure together. This is a wonderful ... morefireside chair, and would bring life and romance to any room. It is structurally sound, though the arms would need to be reinforced for more practical use. The seat measures 23" by 17" The arm measures 27" from arm to arm. It is 38" high. With the seat sitting 18" from the ground. It is a comfortable piece, but more importantly a quite amazing work of art. Condition: Visually Excellent Condition It has numerous repairs to it. Most of which are pictured. Separation of joints here and there. The left hand arm(left hand side if sitting in the chair) has a minor split to the base, where the turned support meets the frame of the seat- this weakens the arm, but does not visually impair the piece. The leather seat has a tear on it, and light crackling throughout the leather cover. Blocks inside of seat frame are 20th century replacements. Age appropriate wear to finish, as well as scratches and abrasions throughout, many of which have fully oxidized to become part of the patina. Please review photos for more full condition. This arm chair with ottoman is very sturdy with beautiful wood carved details. Unfortunately. My Aunt, in the 60's was into refinishing most of her furniture in this creme colored fake wood finish essentially destroying the beauty of the real wood grain. I don't know if it could be stripped down and returned to it's original state. A couple of the pictures show the natural finish on a strip she missed on the backside of the chair.
