THIS IS A PIECE OF AMERICAN HISTORY Vieux Carre' Vieux Carre is the French Quarters in New Orleans. This slate with the art work on the front came from Royal Street. The slates itself were mined in Pennsylvania and floated down the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers on rafts. They were used for roofing material after the fire on Good Friday March 21 1788. This would make the slate alone a piece of history that will almost be 226 years old. The slate is in excellent condition. And has a great story behind it to tell who ever ask about it. Here is a very unusual ESTATE SALE FIND in this PENNSYLVANIA BLUE SLATE SHINGLE from WASHINGTON CROSSING PENNSYLVANIA. The item apparently has some history to it according to a hand written note taped to the back. It reads: This Slate Shingle is from the roof of G. Washington's officers building where they stayed in 1775 at Wash. Crossing PA. The structure burned but this is one of the shingles. Of course I have no way to verify the authenticity of the note. This tool came from an old roofer that specialized in slate and tile work. I was told that you drive this into the dirt or a soft piece of wood and use the top edge for edging the lip and sides of specialized slate tiles that are an od shape. This is forged iron slate anvil. 24" long, 8 1/2" tall, bar is 1 1/4" wide by 3/8" thick. The point spike it forge welded to the cross bar. He said it was made in the 1880's. Weighs 4 lbs. This is from the very early 1800's. This one came from an old building on Bourbon St. It was owned by a famous merchant. LeMoyne. The art work on the front is by Famous Artist, Don Davey. This slate comes from an old building in the'Vieux Carre' The French Quarter, in New Orleans and dates back to the 1800's. The slate is adorned with a signed artist's(Archie Boyd) print of the St. Louis Cathedral. The back of the slate has a short description of the history of the slate.
