He renamed Corticelli because he said woman of that time liked Italian names and cats. The two Corticelli kittens in each corner are holding a spool of thread in their mouth which says Corticelli. The cabinet is made of a hardwood(we think either oak or ash? It measures 21 1/4" wide. It is 9 1/4" high and 18" deep. It still has the wood dividers for the spools of thread. This store display piece was used in old country stores to sell the Corticelli brand of thread. Everything on the cabinet is original. The words, glass and handles. The metal thread is wrapped around a fabric core. The lighter silver metallic thread has a nice light sheen with a white fabric core. The darker silver floss has more of a matte finish with a brown fabric core. Both are soft and pliable. Dates to the 1920's. Great for passementarie. This is a great display piece and then when I discovered it filled with beautiful antique silk threads. I could not believe it! This is a store display piece for Belding Bros. Co. Wash Embroidery Silk. It is a very heavy cardboard box with gold lettering on the top. In the inside of the lid is a name and a date in pencil of 1899. The box has a metal handle on one side. It has 12 sections on the inside. The box measures about 16 by 10 inches and is about 1 3/4 inches high with the lid on it. All the thread in the box is silk. It is in very good condition. Nearly all of it still has the label on it. I will try to give you a list of the threads. I took too many pictures and had to delete some but there are pictures of almost every skein. There ... moreare 13 skeins of Hemingway& Bartlett's Persian floss, burgandy, shade 212(gorgeous) There are 13 Belding Rope silk, 2 light blue couching skeins, at least 7 etching silk skeins and approximately 40 skeins of royal floss of various colors. I counted about 84 skeins and there are some extras without labels or smaller pieces. They are mostly Belding Bros& Co, but there are some Belding Hemingway and 2 Richardson silk. There is one package of Richardson silk that describes how Richard's Silks were awarded the"Grand Prize and"Three Gold Medals" in competition against the world at the Paris Exposition, 1900. See last picture. This is a real find, both as a display piece and beautiful lot of antique silk thread. The box is in very good condition also. The top has some wear and scratches, typical for the age of the piece, but still in very good conditon. ANTIQUE RARE WILLIMANTIC SPOOL THREAD OAK WOOD/WOODEN CABINET 2 DIVIDED DRAWERS
This large antique cabinet has hand painted lettering on the front and the back. Both drawers are divided. So this would be great for organizing your smalls! The top drawer has beautiful bronze pulls and the bottom drawer has porcelain knobs. I think it is all original and is in very good condition except that the drawer with the porcelain pulls is missing the very back slat of the drawer and there is a knot hole in one of the divided squares in the same drawer(see right row, second square back in picture#5) There are some scratches commensurate with age and a small chip on the one upper back corner. The cabinet is approximately 25" wide, 17" deep, and 8 1/2" tall. The spools and other items shown in the drawer are not included. This item will be double boxed for added protection and shipped via UPS, so no p.o. boxes, please.
