Two vintage Needle and Thread mini sewing kits from the Hotel Robert Treat in Newark. New Jersey. Both have essentially the same printing and contents and one also has the name of the manager, L. H. Strawhecker printed on it. The were made by the Samuel Lewis Co. Inc. New York, NY. and have the Patent No. 2109318 printed on them.The Hotel was opened in 1916 and named for Robert Treat who founded Newark in 1666.See photos for details on condition.

OLD MILWARD'S HELIX NEEDLES STORE DISPLAY 2 DRAWER WOODEN CABINET THREAD SPOOL
This walnut case measures approx. 13" x 5 1/4" x 7 1/2" deep not counting the nobs that stick out a little farther. This case was totally painted yellow and has been striped and refinished to what it looked like when it was new. Under that yellow paint was the orginal red wheel cut front panels in good condition. Shows some wear to the wood drawer fronts mainly to the top right corners and the Helix drawer above the left knob on the edge which you can see in the pictures. Offered today is this estate sale treasure. A full length chemise under garment from the Victorian or Edwardian era. It measures 52 inches from the top of the lace straps to the bottom edge, is 31 1/2 inches from the waist to the bottom edge. It is 14 inches across from underarm to underarm, lying flat, 16 inches across at the waist. It is 40 inches across the bottom, lying flat. The skirt portion has 3 layers, the 2 top layers extend from the waist to the bottom, the innermost layer is attached to the 2nd layer 14 inches up from the bottom. Pictures# 3& 4 show the detail of the top layer of the skirt. Pictures# 5& 6 are the middle layer. And picture#7 is the innermost layer. It is an ivory color. Feels like a fine cotton, is home sewn. The back closure is a 15 inch metal zipper, moves smoothly up and down. The fastening at the top ... moreof the zipper is a small flat pearl button and hook& eye. The placket over the zipper has 6 buttonholes for another garment to button onto it. Please view the pictures of the detailing. There is profuse drawn thread lace sections alternating with tiny pleating. there is lace netting. Embroidered sections, It is as found. Has not been laundered. There is some spatter on the back below the zipper placket, there are some broken threads, open seams, see picture# 8, this is either an open side seam or a vertical tear on the innermost layer at the bottom edge. Linen, cotton and gilt silver threads. The foundation weft threads are linen. The 19th century Ottoman period textiles from Syria have characteristic design elements which help identify them. Specifically the radiating or extending tulip"arrows" can be found on silk and metallic thread caftans, curtains, kilims and covers. The repeated serrated flame shapes can be found in many Turkish kilims from Anatolia, Caucasus and Iran. The colorful"arrow" extensions also add motion to the eye of the beholder carrying the design elements to the outer edges of the textile described. Other important identifying"signature" of the Syrian ... moreweavers was the use of rich metallic threads such as silver and gilt silver metallic threads. This added"wealth" made the textile even more desirable in the markets of the Ottoman Empire and beyond. Up for auction are Two(2) antique spools of thread. One is by J& P Coats and the thread is black cotton. Interesting spool because it is non-symmetrical. Spool measures 1-1/2" in height. The paper on either end is perfectly intact. The other is by Belding Corticelli and the thread is silk in a pinkish. Salmon like color. This spool is 1-1/4" in height.
