Airborne Instrument Lab Variable Piston Attenuator, Precision Type, Works
This auction is for a PRECISION PISTON TYPE VARIABLE RF ATTENUATOR. Model 2220-29D5, made by Airborne Instrument Laboratory under a US Air Force contract. The serial number is 4802, as stamped on(or milled into) the body The construction and machining work is a thing of absolute beauty- a MUST see, for certain. Since the item likely dates from the 1960s, it is marked for"30 MC" meaning"30 MHz" in today's nomenclature. For those not familiar with piston attentuators, let me point out a few features and operating characteristics of these devices. Anyone who has seen or used the very popular(in their day) Hewlett Packard 608-series of RF signal generators should be familiar with piston attenuators. The large dial on those old HP sig gens that was used to set output signal level was driving a mechanical piston attenuator ... morethat was buried inside the cabinet. These types of attenuators are very accurate and produce repeatable results over many excursions of the piston. The attenuator does NOT contain resistive elements that dissipate RF energy as heat. Rather. This type of attenuator consists of a pair of coupling elements attached, in this case, to a pair of female BNC connectors. One connector is fixed in position, mounted to a wonderfully chrome plated cyclinder housing. The other connector is part of the moving piston assembly, and it can be adjusted to set the optimum coupling factor between its loop(or probe) and the fixed loop(or probe) at the other end of the cylinder. On this unit, the 1/4" diameter drive shaft is coupled to gears that not only move the piston up and down the cylinder, but which also drive a 3 digit mechanical counter. My testing revealed that a count of"100" on the counter is equal to a 10 dB change in signal level. The counter can go from"000" to"999" implying a range of 99.9 dB, but I was not able to get that much usable attenuation from it.
