This is a U.S. Model 1858 Smooth Side Canteen. It has a tin spout with a rolled lip and a rough woven cover. Stopper and chain, on a split wire ring. For years these canteens were considered Confederate until several contracts with the Saint Louis Arsenal and several companies in the area. The Canteens were made in 1864 and 1865. Some were never issued and were converted to the 1872 model with the canvas cover stamped U.S. It can be shipped Priority Mail for $6.00. These plates are very rare and unusual and are hard~to~find.I purchased these from an ESTATE sale of an elderly man who traveled and collected rare. Antique and vintage items. I do NOT know a whole lot about these except they are very RARE and have"witty" sayings on them. Which I did not take time to translate. None appears to have cracks nor chips. However, they do have pottery indentations in some area from when they were made, which is common. 2 of the plates have a soft scallop like rim with same sayings. 3 of the plates have a thick dark blue rim with same sayings and the last 1 has a thinner blue edge and a different saying.
