Up for auction is a very unusual piece of medical quackery in the form of an ultra violet ray and radiation machine- say what! This device was produced by Lawndale Laboratories in either Lawndale or Los Angeles. Calif during the 1930s or 1940s. These two different cities are listed on two separate labels on the unit. According to the instruction label located inside the lid- the machine was intended to be placed on the floor with one side raised by leaning on the box lid to form a foot rest. Place the bare feet across the tube or machine may be placed in the lap and both hands can lay across the tube. Internet research that I've done on this strange medical quackery device indicates it was touted as a cure for arthritis. Acne, asthma, bronchitis, hay fever, gout, dropsy, constipation, indigestion, jaundice, cold hands and feet, etc, etc ... moreas the list goes on and on and on. This is some brief background on how they are used: The standard speed of transmission of U.S. teletypes was 60 6-character words per minute. This was about twice as fast as a skilled manual operator could send or receive. The transmitting shaft of the teletype ran at such a speed that each revolution corresponded to one character. So the basic speed was 360 rpm. The actual speed was 368.1 rpm, which allowed time for the mechanism driven through a clutch to stop and start for each character. In the U.K. the standard speed was 66 wpm and 404 rpm. The drive motor, geared to the transmitting and receiving shafts through clutches, ran continuously at 2100 rpm, and was closely governed to the desired speed. The stand and unit rolls okay. The serial# is 506056. I plugged the light source in and turned it on and it lit up very brightly and provided light for the colposcope. I looked through the colposcope and everything looked very clear as it should. The bulb is currently burnt-out. But will be replaced before it is sold.
