A vintage foot operated electrical switch. I know how it functions. But I do not know its originally intended application. It functions only as an on/off switch, but it does not click on and click off. Any connected device operates only so long as the foot pedal is maintained in a depressed position. As soon as your foot is removed, electrical current is interrupted. It does not function as a speed control or dimmer device. The foot pad is about three inches square and the cord in about 6 feet long with a 2-prong male/female combination plug. Once connected to an outlet. This is a good quality foot switch made by Marquardt. It was salvaged from an old Philips Electron Microscope built around 1980. The base is 6.9 cm by 12 cm. The foot contact surface is 13 cm by 7.7 cm. The grey plastic appears to be PVC but I do not have the specifications. The internal switch is a clone of the classical Honeywell Microswitch. As a photograph shows there is a place to mount a second microswitch. A photograph also shows that the internal wiring connects to both the normally open and the normally closed contacts of the microswitch. The external cable is 1 m in length and has two conductors connected to the normally open circuit of the microswitch and to pins A and C of the Amphenol connector.
