Antique Vegetable Ivory Tape Measure * Original Silk Tape * Circa 1890
Tape Antique Vegetable Ivory Tape Measure English* Circa 1890 This nice little antique tape measure is carved of vegetable ivory. It has a pierced design around the top and sits on a scalloped& pierced pedestal foot. The silk tape is marked in inches and i t winds in by turning the bone* spindle on top. The tape is complete and original. The condition is excellent with no cracks or other damage. There is a nick in the base. Above the pedestal(see 2nd photo) but it's a flaw in the veg ivory rather than damage. I t measures 2 1/8" high and the base is slightly over 1" in diameter. This item is made of bone from a domestic cow(bovine) and not from an endangered species. Vegetable ivory comes from the corozo or tagua nut of a South American palm tree and was a favorite with the Victorians. It has the hardness and texture of ... moreivory and a warm honey color. I did a bit of research on google and found R. M. Rose Co. moved to Jackonsville from Chattanooga when the Tennessee legislature voted the state"dry" as of 1 January 1908. In 1913 the company was sold to Seagram and Company. So that gives a nice narrow date range for this. Overall this in is very good condition. Celluliod side has bright graphics and is free of damage. Mirror side has good glass with some loss of silvering. Tape inside is not worn and retracts properly. Seaside towns were popular Victorian holiday destinations and many varieties of shells were used to make these little souvenir tapes. This one is a smll cowrie shell. The carved ivory colored knob on the side turns to wind the tape back in and it works well. The silk tape is original and marked in inches(starts at 21" The shell is in excellent condition with no chips. Cracks or other damage. It measures about 1 1/2" long and 3/4" wide. Antique 1930's? Light Blue Rotary Dial Tape Measure Desk Clock Made in the USA
This is a very unique. Antique-1930's? I think, but not for sure. Clock. It is a tape measure style table/desk clock. It's the first one I've ever come across. I uploaded several pictures hoping you can tell more about it and the condition. It looks to be a metal material with an aqua light blue finish. I'm not sure how to set it or how it works. When I went to wind it on the bottom, it has been wound too tight and would not wind. I am not sure how to repair clocks but maybe someone will know. Antique Figural Two Sided Brass Owl+Glass Eyes/Fleur De Lis Sewing Tape Measure
Presented here for your bidding review is this antique brass tape measure. With two different sides-one featuring the face of an owl with glass eyes, and the other side with a central fleur de lis pattern surrounded by fanciful cartouches. The owl side has deeply embossed details, with the golden feathers of the bird standing out in relief against the darker recessed background. Please note that the yellow glass eyes of the owl have cracks in them, as photographed. The other side is quite handsome as well. The brass is somewhat tarnished and scuffed from age and use. The cloth tape is marked on one side with centimeter measurements, and the other side with inches. Once it was 100 centimeters long but now most of the tape is torn off and missing. The winding measurement seemed to work perfectly at first, but now it doesn't seem to want ... moreto retract properly. Still, a very nice antique collectible for the sewing enthusiast. Unusual Victorian Carved Coquilla & Bovine Acorn Tape Measure
This auction is for a very nice ornate carved Victorian antique sewing tape measure.This measures 2 1/2 inches long and is a little less than 1 inch wide. It seems to be carved from the coquilla nut and has white bovine spindle at the top and a pretty carved bovine bead at the green ribbon.There is even a tiny bovine ball at the end of the tape measure. No rips or stains to the tape measure. A small chip at the very top of the acorn and a 1/4" horizontal piece missing from the rim where it opens. other than the two little flaws in very decent shape. from a non smoking home.
